Well done with Mary Hopkin singing "those were the days". The song was the last number in Raskins' last set when they played at London's Blue Angel. The classic movie "Blue Angel" featured Marlene Dietrich. In this movie Miss Dietrich sings the song that came to be associated with her, "Falling in Love Again..."   So, my chain is the Blue Angel club and movie.

Bertie won the chainy last week with Those Were The Days sung by Mary Hopkins which was a hit in the 60s. It was about someone remembering the good times gone by. Another big hit from the 60s on a similar theme of remembering was I Remember You by Frank Ifield which is my chosen link.

So last week the winner was Mary Hopkins with Those Were The Days. The song immediately made me think of a song that's been stuck in my head all week. It covers the same sort of themes but looking forward instead of back - creating memories etc. it's Take That and These Days (instead of Those Days).

Last week Bertie chose a song by Mary Hopkins…..Miss Mary often recorded under the name Mary Visconti when she was not singing on her own records…this was because she married the very famous record producer Tony Visconti. He was perhaps most famous for working with David Bowie and so our link this week is “Sound & Vision” by David Bowie…i think you can hear Miss Mary in the backing vocals...

Bertie won last week with " Those Were The Days" . The flipside of the UK & US versions was " Turn! Turn! Turn!" This was first arranged by Jim McGuinn ( AKA Roger McGuinn) for Judy Collins. While a member of the Byrds McGuinn along with Gene Clark and David Corsby  recorded this #1 hit in 1965. It's an old clip ... couldn't resist. Enjoy!

Mary Opkin wiv Those Were The Days was Bertie's linky. Mary was discovered on Oppportunity Knocks by Twiggy and went on to be signed by Apple wot dus be The Beatles record label. The Beatles sang a song called Yesterday which makes reference to Opportunity Knocks on their first live recording of the song. Yesterday is our linky from The Beatles.

Another singer who had connections with the Beatles, in fact I believe the first to sign up to the Apple records was Mary Hopkins with Those were the days A little known fact the tune comes from an old Czech folk song, the words are also very similar.

Larst week yoo winned wiv Cilla Black Anyone Who Had a Heart. As everyfur noes Cilla used to host a TV show called Surprise Surprise. My reeserch tells me dat One Direction appeared on dat show in 2012. Well I coulda given yoo da song dey sung ( using dat descripshun loosely) but fort I would spare yor poor Dad da agony of having to wotch a teeny bopper boy band so hunted more summat more suitable.  I finds a song (sorta) called Surprise Surprise wot be performed by Billy Talent n gives yoo live vershun Tucker style.

Congrats Skye with Drake's Take Care. That song was based on the Brook Benton chart  I'll Take Care of You which was a 1960 hit by Bobby Blue Bland. Brook was a singer in his own right and had a hit in 1970 with "Rainy Night in Georgia".

last week Miss Skye mentioned that the video for her song was made in 2012 and that made us think about the Olympics….the first event we saw in the 2012 Olympics was the cycling as we live close to the course….so this week we have picked a song we first heard on the credits of a cycling programme…it took us about a month to track down who it was…so my link this week if the brilliant Silver Lining by Fist Aid Kit…

Last week Skye won wiv Take Care about mendin broken earts. Sadly, some hearts can never mend especially when they dus lose the love of they life. Today we did ear that Cilla Black died and they dus say that her heart never mended after losing the love of her life her husband Bobby Willis. So we dedicate this song to the star that was Cilla Black wiv Anyone Who Had A Heart. RIP Cilla and Bobby, together again.

larst week da winnin linky woz Run Boy Run by Woodkid . Weird. Really weird.  Anyhows I had to vestigate . Seems dis Woodkid chappie became moozishun cos he woz given ukulele by Ritchie Havens. RH became faymuss afta doing opening stint at 1969 Woodstock festival ( see dat ties da wood bit in nicely). So I takes a lookysee at weva any of our favrit bands were there. Yep ! The Who. So I gives yoo dem perform My Generation  at dat very furst Woodstock.

This is only the second time I have heard Woodkid. And I like him very much. In the vid for my link Drake - Take Care - you can see the early influence he developed in the vid for " Run Boy Run" . This video was done in 2012. The themes of darkness, animals and hope abound in his direction of these videos.

I see last week's winning link was Snow Patrol with Run. Such a great band for us dogs, we love Snow, Squirrel Patrol, Running and Chasing Cars! This got me thinking about Canine linkies....then all that thinking made me hungry which is another canine trait, well for me anyway. Snow Patrol wiv Run was da winner. Snow Patrol does be a fantastic band. One of their songs we love is called Set The Fire to the Third Bar. This song is about an electric heater with 3 bars when you never had central heating unless you was posh and used to put all three bars of when it was really cold specially when it was snowin outside (see what I did there?), even if it was sunny! So we goin wiv Foo Fighters and Cold Day In The Sun.

Well dun to Tel for picking Anthem by Leonard Cohen! When we fink of anthems, we fink of songs where people sing along and wave their lighters (or mobile phones these days!). One of our faves is On a Day Like This by Elbow. It has been used in lots of tv progs and stuff, and was the closing song for the London Olympics. We are choosing the performance from Glastonbury last year, where the rain clouds cleared to reveal a lovely sunset while they sang 'it's feeling like a beautiful daaaaaay'. Magical!

We were struck by the line "a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in" and how, when things are broken, that in light there is hope of change & repentance. So this week we are going with the themes of hope & light with 'Run' by Snow Patrol

Well done with Leonard Cohen's "Anthem"! When I think of Cohen, I recall the incredible performance by K.D. Lang at the 2010 Winter Olympics. We were all mesmerized by the power of Lang's voice in Cohen's hymn, "Hallelujah".

Another great Leonard Cohen song was Suzanne - a girl he had a platonic relationship wiv. A platonic friend is someone wot you is friends wiv and the subject of sex never comes up. Well done Mr. T with Barry Maguire. Barry became a member of the New Christy Minstrels, a ground breaking folk group.  In honor of Canadian Dominion Day and the Day the Yanks declared Independence, my link is This Land is Your Land covered by the New Christy Minstrels. (the song was written by Woody Guthrie. It has been suggested that Guthrie showed some communistic leanings in the song, but people will say anything.  If this is true, then the song dovetails with Maguire's song.)

Last week's winner was T with Eve of Destruction, a war protest song. Here in England we've seen lots of war over the year and this lady wrote a protest song from the point of view of someone who fought in an English War. It's from her album "Let England Shake" and it's called "The Words that Maketh Murder". It's lovely P J Harvey...

Well done Terence for winning last week's chain with "Eve of Destruction" by Barry McGuire, a protest song against war. Our link this week continues this theme and juxtaposes a catchy pop tune with an anti war message. Heaven by the Psychedelic Furs.

Hmm, we did scratch our heads for a while to make a link from Terence's clever winning linky Eve of Destruction! We fink this song became popular again a few years after its release, when it was performed at Woodstock. We are going to continue with the protest song theme, and Woodstock, with a much more upbeat number. This is an anti war song told with dark humour from a soldier's point of view and was recorded by Country Joe & the Fish. At Woodstock, Country Joe played it solo when he was asked to fill in for Santana while their equipment was being set up, and it was filmed and became part of history! Here he is with I-feel-like-I'm-fixin'-to-die rag.
