Lexie's Chain: The Hundred and Nineteenth Chain

Hello pals! Welcome to week 119 of #lexieschain. Last week the winner was Kelso wiv Entrance of The Gladiators. So lets see wot we got dis week.

@diamondbertie
Fantastic choice for last week The Entry of the Gladiators wonderful music and the link was superb. My choice is Adagio from Spartacus by Khachaturian, we know Spartacus was a slave and gladiator and the music was made famous as the theme from the Onedin Line.

The opening sequence showed the beautiful ship with her sails billowing out and Anne Stallibrass running down to the quay.

@skye613
What a wonderful wining link @kelsoterrier " Entry of the Gladiators." My mind started racing to the circus , carnivals and gladiators. The soundtrack for the film Gladiators in 2000 was written by Hans Zimmer & Lisa Gerrard. It won a Golden Globe. Before composing for movies Gerrard was a member of Dead Can Dance. My suggestion this week is "The Carnival is Over".

@freddie_bt
Dis week's winner gave Dad n I some ead scratchin as we hadn't eard of Julius Fucik n nor nor did we know da name of da piece of music dat's traditionally played for clowns. Anyways we looked im up n discovered he wuz Czech. Well Dad didn't want to choose a song wiv Bohemian wefewences in its title but it turns out dat Mr Fucik like many Czechs wuz born in Prague which takes us nicely to Half Man Half Biscuit wiv da childhood weminiscence dat is "All I Want for Christmas is a Dukla Prague Away Kit". Actually all Dad wanted was a Subbuteo team in Real Madrid kit which he did get one Christmas or Burfday, pwoblem wuz people kept sayin "so yous a Leeds Utd supporter den" which wuz annoyin fer im, understandably.

@bvfeyj
Well, dis week we look for linky to “Entrance of the Gladiators” which was da brilliant winning entry from @kelsoterrier. Me did fink, “what on earf can me link to dat?????” And me did wrack me little brain till me head hurted. Den suddenly out ob da blue me did fink “Entrance of the Gladiators” is sort ob a fanfare for da clowns (or da gladiators) and does we hab uvver fanfares? We does! So me fink we gots da Olympic Fanfare and da Coronation Fanfare and more. Now if you fink about it, clowns, gladiators, royalty, and Olympic afeletes is kind ob elite, so me fink we should consider da “Fanfare for the Common Man” by Aaron Copland.

“Fanfare for the Common Man” by Aaron Copland

Or you can see dis version by Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Performed at Olympic Stadium in Montreal. It bery different, much longer but at least Mr. Copland might recognize da beginning and da end. LMTO.

@smcheetham
Late weeks winner was Kelso and I found getting the link from that one quite tricky to be honest. In the end I have used the word Entrance to give me my link. Entrance led me to door and then to doorbells. So my song is My Doorbell by the White Stripes. There is nothing causes excitement as much here as a ring on the doorbell bark bark bark. Good luck everyone.

@claptonterrier
I see that last week mr Kelso was the winner with "Entry of the Gladiators"….that means a lot of fighting if I remember my history….so we have considered a few "fighting" songs like Eye of the Tiger from the Rocky movies and Sreet Fighting Man by the Rolling Stones and, of course, Saturday Night's All Right for Fighting by Elton John but in the end we have settled for ….*drum roll*…..NO, not Kung Fu Fighting by Carl Douglas…who do you think we are? eh?….we are having "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" by Pat Benatar….

@baxer_man
Well done to Kelso fer his win last weeky in #lexieschain wif da track Entrance of the Gladiators. I dun did google it fer more informashiun and dis be wat it says......

"Entrance of the Gladiators" or "Entry of the Gladiators" (Czech: Vjezd gladiátorů, German: Einzug der Gladiatoren) is a militarymarch composed in 1897 by the Czech composer Julius Fučík. He originally titled it "Grande Marche Chromatique," reflecting the use of chromatic scales throughout the piece, but changed the title based on his personal interest in the Roman Empire.

What da heck do chromatic scales be, is day frum chromatic fish or sumfing? It dunt really help much cause dere bee two many huge werds I dunt noes.

I recognyse it frum da circus but not noes all dis about it dat it be a marchin song. I finks it be a fun song fer a army persun two march two and dis wear I did go lookin fer a notha fun army song. Pa and me rekon Dat one of da bestest army songs be Elvis Costello's classic, Oliver's Army so it be my linky.  I hopes youz all enjoy!

@bunnersandharvs
We says dat Kelso is one cleva paw wif his slecshun last week and der was sum supa songys too. So now we was a marchin our paws around da house trying ta figure a good linky and we thort of da moovie The Gladiator. And guess what? Hanz Zimmer wroted da theme fur dat moovie lyke he did fur about 100 others and one of them others was da Lion King too.

So we going wif a songy in da Lion King wot dus be a theme in dis house which is Hakuna Matata. You knows it means der is nooo worries in life! So get your paws tappin and go wif dat Hakoona Matataa!

@wonderwinger
I'm keeping it simples this week as I is lacking time so my link is from the Gladiator film soundtrack "Now We Are Free". It's just an excuse to ogle at Russell Crowe in a leather skirt really... *opens popcorn* yum

@djladylexie
Okeydokins! Entrance of the Gladiators. Well the linky starts with a gladiator, the most famous one bein Spartacus of course. Now, the original Spartacus movie had an all star cast includin Kirk Douglas as Spartacus. It also famous for Tony Curtis who stands up and say's I'm Spartacus along wiv bowty hundred uvvas! Well, Tony Curtis also starred in Some Like It Hot in which he pretends to be someone else too and mimicks Cary Grant for the part! Cary Grant starred in the movie Houseboat wiv Sophia Loren in which she sung ma linky song – Bing Bang Bong!

An ............. da winner dis week .... as chosen by Kelso dus be ................ @freddie_bt. Woofhoo well done ma pal! First win! Woofhoo!

Now is time to get your finkin caps on an send me (find out how on da guidelines page fing) the next link in the chain. Da winner dis week dus be pickin da winner next week and dat means you Freddie.

You has until noon (GMT) Sunday 5 May  2013 (gots to get it to me by 2pm UK time if poss). Oh sometimes I dus accidentally delete em! Heehee. So good idea to type DO NOT DELETE in the title!

Lexie's Chain: The Hundred and Eighteenth Chain

Hello pals! Welcome to week 118 of #lexieschain. Last week the winner was Briar wiv Send in the Clowns. So lets see wot we got dis week.

@patchdacat
Briar won with a very clever linky and arrived at “Send in the clowns” by Judy Collins. Another well known Judy was Judy Garland. I chose “Over The Rainbow” as my linky.

@terenceterrier
Last da winning linky woz Judi Collins wiv “Send in da Clowns”. Clowns are usually at a circus. So for my linky I chooses “Circus” by Britney Spears.

@kelsoterrier
Hmm, send in the clowns you say? Well, we all know what happens when you send the clowns into the Big Top don't we? They play "Entrance of the Gladiators" as composed by Julius Fučík. Not really a "pop" tune but a very well known piece of music and one guaranteed to bring a smile to your chops.

@baxter_man
Dis week it be hard i fought and fought as much as me little brain would werk. I was not eatin as well as normal cause i was finking so much and i not like dat situation! I try's to fink of all angles den I finks who bee da mostest famous clown I noes......but nuffing comes two mind den BINGO, Pa do sumfing silly and Ma says "You're such a clown sumtimes". I don't fink it was two complementary towardes Pa!

It gave me da start and frum dere it waz easy. Ma's kennel name bee Carol, I dunt understood why she still live wif Pa he alwayes acting da fool. Derefore my #lexieschain entrie dis week be "Oh Carol" by Neil Sedaka cause I now be finking, Oh Carol why did youz marry him!

@bunnersandharvs
Well dun to da Briar fur dat Linky last week wot is Send in Da Clowns! Our linky, as usoooal is rilly simples. Why? Cause we says clowns dus be good for making us larf so we goin fur a songy in one of my favurite moovies 'Singing In Da Rain' and da particuular songy wot be called 'Make Em Laugh!' Hit it pals.... deee daa doo Caus if short peeples have long faces and Tall peeeples have short faces you gots to larf. Anyway, enjoy da linky and we hopes it makes you larf too.....

@borderpup
Right, we needs to find a linky from Send in the Clowns, hmmm ... Well, this song was written by Stephen Sondheim for his moosical 'A Little Night Music', and he parrently did write it speshully for the actress Glynis Johns who played the role off Desiree in the Broadway vershun. In the US tour of the moosical, the role was played by Jean Simmons, who in turn was later replaced by Virginia McKenna. Ms McKenna later famusly played the part of Joy Adamson in the fillum 'Born Free', which did have an Oscar winning feem toon sung by Matt Monro, so dat is ma linky:

@diamondbertie
Here is my entry for this week, my first reaction for Andrea Bocelli singing Pagliacci a very sad song sung by a clown a lament for lost love which had to follow on from Judy Collins singing Send in the Clowns where the singer is so sand and angry.

@bvfeyj
Congrats to Briar! As we know Briar did win wif da bery clever linky “Send In the Clowns” by Judy Collins. Once again dere was lots ob possibilities from dere, but me hab chosen dis one. Stephen Sondheim did write dat song and it be from da musical “A Little Night Music”. He say dat da clowns is not circus clowns, but instead refers to “fools”. The song was specifically written for da actress Glynis Johns who created da character ob Desiree on Broadway. She was not a powerful singer able to sustain notes so dat why he wrote it da way he did in short phrases. Judi Dench did play dis role in London. Judi Dench is famous as stage actress more dan fur mobies, though she is not known so much as a singer. Early in his career when he was still pretty unknown Stephen Sondheim did also write da lyrics for “Gypsy”. Dis part was created by da bery famous and talented stage actress and singer, Ethel Merman. So me does choose da wonderful “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” from “Gypsy” performed by the late great Ethel Merman! Now she is a singer!

@rosieterrier
Well done Briar on your win last week. The Brotherhood of Man (keep a straight face!) also sang the beautiful 'Send in the Clowns'. They also sang a song called 'Angelo'. As we all know, even though she didn't want us to, that Adele's son is called Angelo. Adele is a female singer along with Duffy, Amy Whinehouse and Birdy. This week my chainy is 'Shelter' by Birdy.

@claptonterrier
Hello Miss Lexie. I saw that last week Lady Briar won with "Send in the Clowns" a song by Stephen Sondheim from the 1973 musical A Little Night Music. That made us think about music about the night….and of course the only link from thinking along that road is "In the Midnight Hour" by Wilson Pickett….

@smcheetham
Hi all another week another chain. Winner last week was Send in the Clowns. As ever I am so predictable I am using a word in the title to connect to one of my favourite songs which as you will be seeing are mainly of the indie variety even though I am far too old to carry on in this vein. This week I am using the word Send as my link. My link is to We Can Send Letters by Aztec Camera if you have never heard it its well worth a listen. good luck everyone.

@skye613
Last week the chain was won with " Send In The Clowns " (Congrats Briar! ) written by Stephen Sondheim. In an interview Sondheim explained that he did not mean circus clowns but fools. Heroes are the anything but fools. In light of the events in Boston this week my link celebrates the everyday people becoming heroes and anything but fools. Meat Loaf with Brian May " A Time For Heroes "

@freddie_bt
Dad had lots of ideas fe da train linky last week but missed da boat. He stwuggled wiv clown n Sondheim links so he's focussed on Judy Collins. As wuz pointed out Judy Collins wuz girlfriend of Stephen Stills n also pwomoted work of young songwriters includin Joni Mitchell. Joni Mitchell wuz girlfriend of Graham Nash so Dad apologises coz he's makin link dat takes us stwaight back into the post-Byrds David Crosby world of late 60s California. Anyways Dad's choice is a song that Judy Collins recorded and popularised but Dad has chosen Joni Mitchell singing and playing her own composition da beautiful "Both Sides Now. Is dere a more perfect metaphor than "ice cream castles in the air"

@djladylexie
Hmm right-o clowns, clowns ok. Right so … Send In The Clowns is not about the circus or anyfink you will be surprised to hear. It's actually refers to how when a show (or your life) is going badly, send in the clowns or have a joke around, have a laugh. Well clowns are quite funny tho aint they so I spose that is where the idea comes from. I will tell you one clown wot isn't very funny and is quite sad really is Pierrot. So ma linky dus be pierrot and who better to tell about that than the wonderful Leo Sayer, dressed as Pierrot singing The Show Must Go On.

And ............. da winner dis week .... as chosen by ma Briar dus be ................ @kelsoterrier. Well dun again ma pal! Woofhoo!

Ere be wot Briar said bowt fings:

The winner is linky no 3 for the originality factor. A very close second was linky no. 5 as my humum is so often a short person with a long face, but that song turned her frown upside down. Highly commended sausages to linkys no 6, 8 & 13. Although anyone could have been a winner.

Now is time to get your finkin caps on an send me (find out how on da guidelines page fing) the next link in the chain. Da winner dis week dus be pickin da winner next week and dat means you Kelloggs!!

It's over to you! Email me: lexie at toxicpenguin dot com or DM me on twitter (@dogstoyevsky) wiv your link suggestion followin on from dis one! You has until noon (GMT) Sunday 28 April 2013 (gots to get it to me by 2pm UK time if poss). Oh sometimes I dus accidentally delete em! Heehee. So good idea to type DO NOT DELETE in the title!

Lexie's Chain dus be inspired by da pawsome Radcliffe & Maconie Show wot you can has a listen to on dere website. Follow me @dogstoyevsky or #lexieschain on Twitter to join da fun. Remember anyfink goes! Rock, classical, opera, ballads, punk, reggae - is up to you! Fanx for playin!

Lexie's Chain: The Hundred and Seventeenth Chain

Hello pals! Welcome to week 117 of #lexieschain. Last week the winner wos me wot be Lexie wiv Marrrakech Express by Nash & Crosby. So lets see wot we got dis week.

@skye613
The great Lexie did win the chain with "Marrakesh Express" by CSN. Nash wrote the tune after taking a train from Casablanca in 1966. It was included in the first album by CSN released in 1969. A history making year 1969 saw the outdoor music festival scene explode. Woodstock and Altamont being perhaps the most famous. CSN played both venues as did the Jefferson Airplane. My link this week is "Wooden Ships" written by David Crosby, Steven Stills and Paul Kantnor performed by Jefferson Airplane at Woodstock. Trains, planes & ships.

@patchdacat
The winning linky last week was “Marrekesh Express” by Nash & Crosby. Graham Nash had previously been in The Hollies. So I chooses The Hollies with “Just One Look”.

@bvfeyj
Me decide to go wif da train link. But den how to pick da linky? So many wonderful songs about trains or featuring trains or connected to trains somehow. Marakesh Express was written by Graham Nash about a trip he took on da train ob da same name. Well, a few years later Steve Goodman also wrote a song about a train trip he took which is also named after da train he took. Boaf songs tell ob da sights and sounds and feelings ob da trip. It became a big hit for Arlo Guthrie and his is da best known version and my faborite one. So here we hab “City of New Orleans” by Arlo Guthrie!

@diamondbertie
Nash and Crosby was last week weeks winner with Marrakech Express, I kept thinking of a suitable link Turkish Rondo by Mozart came to mind, then I figured someone else may choose that so I settled for Mustapha sung by Jose Guardiola.

@wonderwinger (Ed Lexie: fink is Humphrey Bogart ma pal but we get the picture)
The Marrakech Express is a train that travels from Casablanca to Marrakech. Casablanca was a film starring Cary Grant & Ingrid Bergman. This film is famed for amongst other things the misquoted line "Play it again Sam" Cary Grant actually says "Play it Sam" the song he's asking to be played is "As Time Goes By" as sung by Dooley Wilson.

As Time Goes By was a sitcom starring Geoffrey Palmer and Judi Dench. Crosby, Stills and Nash recorded a song called Suite: Judy Blue Eyes. This song was for Stephen Stills' girlfriend of the time: Judy Collins. Judy Collins had a hit with my linky, "Send in the Clowns". This song was also performed by Judi Dench at the composer Stephen Sondheim's 80th birthday celebration at the Royal Albert Hall.

@smcheetham
Hi everyone well done Lexie for last week. I have gone for a train link from Marakesh Express to another train song. Showing my age by declaring that my first musical love was The Monkees and the first 45 I ever bought was by them. Using the train link my suggestion is Last Train to Clarksville by The Monkees. Good luck everyone.

And ............. da winner dis week .... as chosen by ma dad dus be ................ Briar wiv Send in the Clowns and he said 1) he hates clowns 2) he don't really like that song 3) he for it was a clever linky 4) he was disappointed there was no techno! heehee

Now is time to get your finkin caps on an send me (find out how on da guidelines page fing) the next link in the chain. Da winner dis week dus be pickin da winner next week and dat means you !!

It's over to you! Email me: lexie at toxicpenguin dot com or DM me on twitter (@dogstoyevsky) wiv your link suggestion followin on from dis one! You has until noon (GMT) Sunday 21 April 2013 (gots to get it to me by 2pm UK time if poss). Oh sometimes I dus accidentally delete em! Heehee. So good idea to type DO NOT DELETE in the title!

Lexie's Chain: The Hundred and Sixteenth Chain

Hello pals! Welcome to week 116 of #lexieschain. Last week the winner wos Kelso aka @kelsoterrier wiv Que Sera Sera from Doris Day. So lets see wot we got dis week.

@djladylexie
Doris Day sings this song in the movie The Man Who Knew Too Much wot dus be a Alfred Hitchcock filum where their son gets kidnapped after a dyin man whispers in his ear about assasination attempt.

Well, this all takes place in Marrakech, Morocco. So, I fink I focus on songs wot menshun Marrakech. Wot betta than the Marrakech Express!

@maggietkat
Mom remembers listening to "Que sera sera" on AM radio as a young kit. The Oscar winning tune was from the Hitchcock movie "The Man Who Knew too Much". Probably my favorite Hitchcock film is "Rear Window" which has naturally been spoofed over the years. The Simpsons sppofed the movie in "Bart of Darkness", a hot summer where Bart had broken his leg and watched Flanders killing his plant. The episode ends with Frank Sinatra singing "Summer Wind", my choice for the chain.

@skye613
Mr. Kelso was da winner with Miss Doris Day singing " Que Sera Sera " which has a line " The future's not ours to see" . Mr. leonard Cohen says " I have seen the future, brother & it's murder ".

@diamondbertie
Last week was the lovely Doris Day singing Que Sera Sera, a great song where someone is asking what the future will be. My choice is In the Year 2525 sung by Zager & Evans, why? this song is predicting the future both songs though old unforgettable.

@smcheetham
Well done Kelso for last week. It's been such a lovely day today I am doing my link earlier than usual because I have a tweet up tomorrow with other BT Pals from Twitter. As ever my links are quite simple but I always like to suggest a good tune as everyone does. I am using the word Day as the link this time from Doris Day. One of the best live bands I have seen are Elbow and they always get the crowd singing with this sonf "One Day Like This" so my link is Day to Elbow One Day Like THis good luck everyone.

@bvfeyj
Da clever @kelsoterrier did win last week wif Doris Day and Que Sera Sera. Since Doris Day is animal activist me fink who else in music supports anipals. Some bery famous peoples do! So me choose for linky dis week “I’ll Stand By You” by Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders). She is not only animal activist but she is a vegetarian and did hab vegan restaurant in Akron, Ohio.

@patchdacat
Kelso’s winning linky was “Que Sera Sera (whatever will be will be)” by Doris Day. Karma is said to control our destiny so I choses for my linky this week “Instant Karma” written & sung by John Lennon.

@wonderwinger
Aha the marvellous Kelso wins again, a truly fine Border Terrier indeed. Compliments over on with the linky. So last week we had a little number from Doris Day. Doris Day starred with Howard Keel in Calamity Jane which was Warner Brother's answer to the MGM film, Annie Get Your Gun. Howard Keel starred in Annie Get Your Gun and sang with Betty Hutton my linky "Anything You Can Do".

It was the pregnancy of Betty Hutton that had led to Day being cast in her first major film role, Romance on the High Seas. In 1962 Doris Day recorded all of the songs from Annie Get Your Gun for an album of the same name.

@claptonterrier
Last week Mr Kelso chose Que Sera Sera as his link in the chain. That song is often used as the basis for a famous football chant…."Qure sera sera, whatever will be will be, we're going to Wemberleee, que sera sera…"…and as my team is hopefully going to Wembley this year I am going to choose a famous football song as my link this week…so (with apologies)…its Gazza with Fog on the Tyne…

@rosieterrier
Congratulations to Mr Agility himself for winning da chainy last week. I have a dog themed link this week. Doris Day did duet with Frank Sinatra on 'Lets Take an Old Fashioned Walk'. Frank Sinatra did duet with Luther Vandross on 'The Lady is a Tramp'. Luther Vandross sang a song called 'Come Back' and finally....... An artist who made a comeback is Paul Simon. I choose his song 'Diamonds on the Soles of her Paws'. ;-)

@chillibrambles
We fink @kelsoterrier came up wiv a trickee one in Que Sera Sera, but we has done some diggin an found out some fings. First fing: Doris day had a son called Terry Melcher. second fing : he produced the Byrds cover hit Tambourine Man. Fird fing: our linky is Tambourine Man.

And ............. da winner dis week .... as chosen by @kelsoterrier du be ............. on no no no no! Is me again pftttt flippin eck dad not gonna be appy!

Now is time to get your finkin caps on an send me (find out how on da guidelines page fing) the next link in the chain. Da winner dis week dus be pickin da winner next week and dat means you the dad!!

It's over to you! Email me: lexie at toxicpenguin dot com or DM me on twitter (@dogstoyevsky) wiv your link suggestion followin on from dis one! You has until noon (GMT) Sunday 14 April 2013 (gots to get it to me by 2pm UK time if poss). Oh sometimes I dus accidentally delete em! Heehee. So good idea to type DO NOT DELETE in the title!
