Lexies Chain: The Hundred and Seventy Fifth Chain

Hello pals! Welcome to week 175 of #lexieschain. Impawtant Note pals, mum goin into hospital on the 4th June and will be out of action for a few weeks so Lexie's Chain will have to go on hold after next week until she allowed to help me on computa again pffttt - selfish moo!!

Last week da winner was Wyn wiv God Only Knows from Beach Boys. Let's see wot we gots dis week:

@maggietkat
Well done with "God Only Knows". There were 3 Wilson brothers, Brian, Dennis, and Carl. Dennis was on drums until the band split up. Dennis later starred in a movie called "Two Lane Blacktop" with costar James Taylor. Although neither musician's music was featured in the film, a wonderful love song written by Kris Kristofferson was, "Me and My Bobby McGee".

@diamondbertie
Last week @WOtterface won the chain with God Only Knows by The Beach Boys, this group also have Good Vibrations to their credit which was a Psychedelic song.
This reminded me of another boy band The Beatles which if my memory serves me were the Beach Boys inspiration. I have to think of the Beatles Psychedelic song Lucy in The Sky With Diamonds, therefore this is my choice for this weeks chain.

@terenceterrier
Clever Wynn won da chainy wiv “God Only Knows” by The Beachboys. The Beachboys were formed in Hawthorne California in 1961 n this songy woz released in 1966. Annuver US group wot formed in da Swinging Sixties woz The Mamas and the Papas. I sticks wiv both da California link & da 60’s link & choose their big hit “ California Dreaming” wot woz released in 1965 as my linky.

@bunnersandharvs
So den a veree big well done to dat Wotter fur da winning linky last week by da Beach Boys 'God Only Knows'. We dus love dat songy, well Mum does and it did make us think that if someone did leave, you would feel like you was in a different world and you would be in deespar saying I can't stop thinking of him or her. So our linky is another old songy by a group called 'The Fifth Dimension and der songy 'One Less Egg to Fry'. Why? Well, you in another dimension (Mum says) cos you soooo sad and den you miss cooking dat fried egg fur dem. We did said dat if dat lady wos so sad she could cook dat egg fur us...hee hee.

Enjoy your selekshun dis week Wotter. We hopes you enjoys dis old songy and da clothes in dis videeo too.

@freddie_bt
God Only Knows, our favourite Beach Boys song, On Pet Sounds Brian Wilson broke with the constraints of the surf sound. He wanted to write his music in his way and God Only Knows is the finest example and regarded by many including Paul McCartney as a deeply moving song. It was unusual in that it included the word God in the title. Though a song about love rather than God it made us think of spiritual music, our favourite is by John Tavener perhaps the greatest composer of the late 20th Century. His "Protecting Veil" is from the Orthodox tradition and is also about love, that of the Virgin Mary providing a protecting love for the faithful. Tavener too wrote the music he wanted not what was demanded, this is a deeply religious work that extracts an intense emotional & ethereal sound from the cello.

@claptonterrier
Hi Miss Lexie..last week Miss Wyn chose “God Only Knows” by the Beach Boys…..i always find these very famous songs the most difficult to get links for….we know that Pet Sounds from which the song was taken is a very influential piece of music….lots of musicians say they love it and Paul McCartney says that God Only Knows is his favourite song of all time…in which case we will repay the favour and say that our favourite music of all time is the melody from Abbey Road…featuring Golden Slumbers, Carry That Weight and the End….you can’t really separate the bits can you?…no,no,no…not allowed…so the Abbey Road medley is my choice this week…

p.s typis insists on saying that this bit shows why if Ringo was not the best drummer IN the Beatles he was the best drummer FOR the Beatles…*yawn*...

@borderpup
Wot a dilemma, trying to find a link wiv 'God Only Knows' by the Beach Boys. Music dussnt get much better than dat! When arranging the song Brian Wilson used lots of different instruments with many musicians contributing to reputedly
20 takes to produce the finished version.

Another musician who takes lots of instruments to produce many layers of sound is Tom Scholz of Boston. He is also a perfectionist like Brian Wilson and spent many hours in his basement working on his productions. Like Wilson, he was not the lead singer on our 'chain' song, their biggest hit, 'More Than a Feeling'.

@skye613
This is probably to late but wanted to send anyway. Congrats to Wyn for a great choice! Brian Wilson is one of the "greats" . He had a very hard childhood as his father beat him quite regularly . That made me think of who else had survived after enduring this type of horror. The Beach Boys followed Ike & Tina Turner on New Years Eve in 1961 at the Ritchie Valens Memorial Dance. Ike also abused Tina Turner. This is one of my favs from Tina Turner A true survivor.

@djladylexie
God Only Knows is an awesome song. Brian Wilson was one of the first pop songs to use God in the title. So we are goin wiv religious connection. There are many bands and singers who have religious lyrics in their moosic, U2, Mumford & Sons and Black Sabbarf to mention a few. We fort we look at the other side, the side of the devil, if you will. Interestingly featurin another Brian, Brian Jones, we goin wiv The Rolling Stones and Sympathy For the Devil.

An da winner ... as chosen by  .... @WOtterface ...... dus be ......... oh ...... me! So dat mean ma dad dus be choosin next week!

Ere wot Wyn said:  Wow, some brilliant choices this week but it came down to links 3 and 9. Both classics. We're going to go with link 9 as Mom used to dance to it lots at her favourite night out (while very drunk). Well done link 9!

So it's over to you. Email me: lexie at toxicpenguin dot com or DM me on twitter (@dogstoyevsky) wiv your link suggestion followin on from dis one! You has until 1st June 2014 (gets it to me by 2pm UK time if poss). Oh sometimes I dus accidentally delete em! Heehee. Lexie's Chain: The Hundred and Seventy Fourth Chain

Hello pals! Welcome to week 174 of #lexieschain. Last week da winner was Maggie wiv Steely Dan and Show Biz Kids. Let's see wot we gots dis week:

@djladylexie
Steely Dan were quoted as bein perfect musical antiheroes of the 1970's. So we started finkin bowt heroes and antiheroes which nicely leads to The Stranglers and No More Heroes.

@WOtterface
So last week Maggietkat won with Steely Dan and we started thinking about how Steel is a metal and were thinking of going down the heavy metal route or other bands with metal in their names or songs. But while we were reading Steely Dan's wiki page we saw that one of the members had terrible stage fright and it got us thinking about other artists with stage fright. We did some research and found that Barbara Streisand, Robbie Williams and Adele all suffer with stage fright, as does Brian Wilson. So, we chose the stunningly beautiful "God only knows" by the Beach Boys as our chain for this week.

@freddie_bt
We ad never eard da luvly song Show Biz Kids, our Steely Dan knowledge wuz limited to Reelin in the Years. Anyways we fawt of linkys on da subject of showbiz kids which mostly conjured up ghastly X Factor type images but we also fawt of da Kora player Toumani Diabate who can trace his musical lineage back 71 generations, musician is a herediitary profession in Mali. In da 80s Toumani performed wiv his father, now Toumani n his son Sidiki share da concert stage. In interviews Toumani talks of how he modernised da style of playin n how Sidiki is now doin da same as well as recordin electronic music n bein in a successful Rap duo. Rap in Africa is not about guns n gangs. Da Kora mite be an ancient complex string instrument but its musical style continues to develop fanks to da importance of heritage n parents passin on deir skills n profession to deir kids. So our linky is Toumani n Sidiki Diabate playin a Kora duet.

@claptonterrier
Last week Miss Maggie chose the song “Show Biz Kids” by the great Steely Dan…(I cannot tell you how many times that song has been played here)…..anyhoo, we always thought the song was about rich kids in Hollywood “making movies of themselves” as the song says….so this week we thought about songs by actors….ahem, there is a very rich seam of songs by actors…who probably should have stuck to acting…so this week we have William Shatner singing Pulp’s Common People!! See what I did there?

@terenceterrier
Da winning linkie last week be “Show Biz Kids” by Steely Dan. There haz been lotsa show biz kids in da moosik bizniss. Da family I fort of woz da Jackson Five. Corse da most well known woz Michael. Da linky last week came from da early 70’s so I chooses a linky by Michael from the same time wot be “Ben” ( Also cos I haz a fing abowt ratties. For lexiechainers wot woznt born then Ben woz a film abowt a rat n dis woz da theme toon )

@bunnersndharvs
Well here's to you Maggie fur your eggselent linky and win last week Show Biz Kids. Dad dus love dat Steely Dan and so dus wee but as much as we dus lyke dem we is going wid a funnee/ord linky dis week. Why? Well cos we was thinking about bein in Show Biz and how peeeples in dat buziness dus gets on wid things and well so dus us paws. You know? So, our linky (hee hee) dus be frum Ethel Merman singing 'There's No Business Like Show Business' from da moovie wid dat same title too.

@borderpup
So, how to link from 'Showbiz Kids'? Well, we fort of 'The Kids are Alright' by The Who. They wrote this song when they were just kids themselves, and apparently when they perform it nowadays they add on verses about wot has happened to them over the years, growing up in showbiz. This song has been covered many times by different artists, but here's the original single version.

@skye613
Great tune from Maggie. Awpaws! " Show Biz Kids was written by Donald Fagen & Walter Becker. The song has been covered many times. Rickie Lee Jones did an awesome version. In 1989 Jones released Flying Cowboys which was produced by Walter Becker. My choice this week is " Horses " from this album. This was co- written by Jones & Becker. Enjoy!

An da winner ... as chosen by  .... @maggietkat ...... dus be ......... @WOtterface. Yay! Well done Wyn my pal, annuva great win!! So dat meant you dus be choosin next week!

Ere wot Maggie said: So many good links! I was amazed there wasn't one for Las Vegas (Lost Wages which was the backup singer's refrain). The African music was amazing, Brian Wilson is incredible despite all his issues, can't say enough about Rickie Lee Jones (who isn't the Ricki in the Dan song), and Michael and Ethyl and that great punk number, and William Shatner were brilliant. However, I have to choose Brian Wilson with "God Only Knows" as #1.

So it's over to you. Email me: lexie at toxicpenguin dot com or DM me on twitter (@dogstoyevsky) wiv your link suggestion followin on from dis one! You has until 25th May 2014 (gets it to me by 2pm UK time if poss). Oh sometimes I dus accidentally delete em! Heehee. Lexie's Chain: The Hundred and Seventy Third Chain

Hello pals! Welcome to week 173 of #lexieschain. Last week da winner was Indie wiv The Doobie Bruvvas an Long Train Runnin'. Let's see wot we gots dis week:

@WOtterface
So, apparently a "doobie" is a special kind of cigarette, a naughty cigarette with something called drugs in it. So our link this week is a classic ode to addiction: Perfect Day by Lou Reed (not the crappy version with Bono and. Heather Small in, the proper version).

@maggietkat
Well done with the Doobies' "Long Train Runnin" which was on their 1973 album. The second incarnation of the Doobies featured Jeff "Skunk" Baxter and Michael McDonald who met while working with Steely Dan. Using this muscian link, I am going with a Steely Dan song also from 1973, "Show Biz Kids". A few years ago, Michael McDonald toured with The Dan, so here is a wonderful recording of Michael singing lead. Great shots of Walter and Donald (singing backup).

@skye613
Paws are dancing & clapping. Great linky and an easy one for me. So we was driving down the road & it came .... We have doobies & trains and only one way to go. " Sittin' downtown in a railway station." "One Toke Over The Line" Brewer & Shipley . Thanks Lexie & Mum for all the hard work you do!

@freddie_bt
The Doobies wuznt bruvvers bot got deir name coz of deir fondness fer gettin high. Da inevitable consequence of da high is da low, cause of many pwoblems but also made me fink of a linky, Nick Lowe who I av listened to fer a long time but wot tune to pick fwom someone dat has been writin gweat songs since Brinsley Schwarz in da early 70s. Well on his bwilliant 2001 CD The Convincer he did a cover of da Jonny Rivers song "Poor Side of Town" which features Doobie or more likely Do-Be in da chorus indeed da song finishes wiv dis. Its a song bout lost love n bein fwom da wrong side of da tracks, not unlike Long Train Runnin. Ere's Nick Lowe's excellent version recorded wiv some of his fwends includin Geraint Watkins melodic keyboards.

@diamondbertie
Sorry to leave it till the last minute, @borderpup won last weeks chain with The Doobie Brothers" Long TrainRunning, I keep the theme of trains and railways going with my choice which Alma Cogan singing In The Middle of the House.

@smcheetham
Morning all well done @borderpup so Doobie Brothers I like easy links so I am using brothers as the link to take me to real brothers in bands. Ray and Dave Davies had a very tempestuous relationship worse even than those Gallagher brothers but they certainly made brilliant music so my link is to their first number one You Really Got Me by The Kinks enjoy.

@djladylexie
Doobie Bruvvas was a band. I like the word doobie. We cod go wiv doobie, wot be slang for a joint for smokin. We could go wiv scooby dooby do, a clever doggie wot was a detective wiv is feme too scooby dooby do where are you? The there's also doobie doobie doo which is the improv Sinatra sings at the end of Strangers In the Night. We plumped for shooby dooby doo wop, pop pop shoo wop!! Talk about! Pop Muzik. So our linky is Pop Muzik from M!

An da winner ... as chosen by  .... @borderpup ...... dus be ......... @maggietkat. Yay! Well done my pal, annuva great win Maggie!! So dat meant you dus be choosin next week!

Ere wot Indie said: Annuver great selection of toons from chainers this week! We picked our top 3 then had to choose winner, who is ... *drumroll* number 2, wiv Steely Dan and Showbiz Kids.  We liked the link wiv progression of the band and the different members into the present day. Our other contenders were 2 more triffic toons: number 6 wiv the Kinks and number 7 wiv M.

So it's over to you. Email me: lexie at toxicpenguin dot com or DM me on twitter (@dogstoyevsky) wiv your link suggestion followin on from dis one! You has until 18th May 2014 (gets it to me by 2pm UK time if poss). Oh sometimes I dus accidentally delete em! Heehee. Lexie's Chain: The Hundred and Seventy Second Chain

Hello pals! Welcome to week 172 of #lexieschain. Last week da winner was Diamondbertie with Chatanooga Choo Choo from The Andrew Sisters. Let's see wot we gots dis week:

@WOtterface
Well, this week we decided to use the theme of siblings in a band to decide on our link and there was only one choice for us, the "easy on the eye" Jared and Shannon Leto of Thirty Seconds to Mars. So here are Thirty Seconds to Mars with Kings and Queens, it's a long video but there are shorter versions available...

@maggietkat
Well done with chattanooga choo choo! I want to stay with the transportation and war theme, this time the Viet Nam War. In 1968 the Hollie released Bus Stop as the war escalated. The harmonies interweave with a young man's dreams of love.

@freddie_bt
Few subjects have been romanticised in so much music and art as the train, nowadays in Britain at least trains have lost some appeal being nothing more than functional at best. The charm though lives on in posters, privately run steam trains and "The Night Mail" made in 1936 by the GPO Film Unit for which W.H. Auden's beautiful rhythmic poem was commisioned. The narrated poem transformed a documentary into a work of art that was more about people's desire for companionship and contact than it was about a mobile sorting office. Thankfully Public Service Broadcasting still exists though now as a 3 piece band. They used clips from the film and Auden's poem in an evocative song and video with soaring Rickenbacker and drums driving it along at a cracking pace. The video is surely an homage to O. Winston Link's photography, railway sidings at night, silent trains and bright light. Night Mail.

@skye613
Bertie chose a great link from the very famous trio the Andrews Sisters. Seems another famous trio jumped on that train and went to see Elvis!

@smcheetham
Morning all well done Bertie for last week. Bertie's choice was by the Andrews Sisters who were real sisters. I have gone therefore with a sisters link to First Aid Kit who are sisters from Stockholm who have perfected the sibling close harmony singing. They are very young and their voices are so clear and so beautifully harmonised. I have choose their song Lions Roar I hope you enjoy listening and all have a good week.

@bunnersandharvs
So den well dun to dat Bertie & his hoomans fur choo chooosing a great linky last week! We lykes dem Andrews songy Chattanooga Choo Choo. It gots us thinking about being on trains and well you eventually comes to da end of da line eventually and dis gots us thinking about a songy we dus lyke and guess wot? It's song on a train, well a freight train and is by The Traveling Wilburys and is called 'End of the Line. Good luck choosing your linky dis week pal.

@terenceterrier
Last week winnin linky woz Chattanooga Choo Choo by The Andrews Sisters. The Beverley Sisters were 3 sisters in the UK from the same era who were similar in style to the Andrews. I choose for my linky their record which was the only one which made it in the US charts . It be “" Greensleeves”.

@borderpup
We bin pondering on a linky from Chattanooga Choo Choo, hmmm. First we did fink about all the different places the song mentioned, which made us fink of looking for a song which mentions place names and has been a hit in many different countries and in different versions. And guess what? That did bring us back to a train again! And not sisters this time, but brothers! (Ok, they weren't really related, but that's what they were called!) The Doobie Brothers wiv Long Train Runnin'.

@djladylexie
The Andrew Sisters were an american group of sisters who were well known during the swing and boogie-woogie era of the 1930s and 1940's. One of their uvva famous songs wot they sung was Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, heavily associated with world war ii. The bugle is a brass instrument that dussnt av no valves to help wiv pitch. All pitch control is done by the player using facial muscles and lips to alter the sound. Annuva brass instrument wot is easier on the face muscles and lips dus be the trombone. Course, a great band leader and trombonist who worked wiv Andrew Sisters could only be Glenn Miller. So we go wiv Glenn Miller and In The Mood.

An da winner ... as chosen by  .... @diamondbertie ...... dus be ......... @borderpup. Yay! Well done again my pal! You on a roll. So dat meant you dus be choosin next week, Indie!

Ere wot Bertie said: what a lot of great choices! Excellent linkies, it was so tough I had Master help me. My choice in number 8 The Doobie Brothers, Long Train Running, a good link and and good song. Well done to whoever.

So it's over to you. Email me: lexie at toxicpenguin dot com or DM me on twitter (@dogstoyevsky) wiv your link suggestion followin on from dis one! You has until 11th May 2014 (gets it to me by 2pm UK time if poss). Oh sometimes I dus accidentally delete em! Heehee. So good idea to type DO NOT DELETE in the title and dussnt forget to send a linky to da video from You Tube!
