Lexie's Chain: The Hundred and Ninth Chain

Hello pals! Welcome to week 109 of #lexieschain. Last week the winner wos @skye613 wiv Killing Me Softly by Roberta Flack. So lets see wot we got dis week.

Last week's winner was Killing Me Softly….we know that songs about killing people are called murder ballads and Mr Nick Cave did an album called Murder Ballads a few years ago. We looked at a very long list of people who played on that record and we noticed that one of them was Shane McGowan from the Pogues….so our link this week in honour of our impending departure from the UK is "Leaving Liverpool" by the Pogues, a song all about travelling overseas in search of fresh adventures.

Last week’s winning linky was by Roberta Flack & she sung “Killing You Softly”. There have been lots of cover versions. The Fugee was one group who recorded this. They also did a cover version of a Bob Marley song “No women no cry” . But let’s have the master himself I say so I gives you Bob Marley singing it live.

Righty Ho. Last week Skye won wiv “Killing Me Softly by Roberta Flack. My linky this week is “Empty Chair” by Don McLean because this song inspired Lori Lieberman to write the poem upon which the song "Killing Me Softly" is based.

Another great week on the chain last week it just seems to get better and better. The winning suggestion was Killing me Softly by Roberta Flack. Roberta sang a lot of Bert Bacharach songs in her career so that opened up a lot of options. My fave song by him is I Just Don't Know What to do with Myself. There are many great versions of that song By Dusty Springfield, Elvis Costello to name a couple but the one I would suggest is by the White Stripes so this week my suggestion is I Just Dont Know What to do with Myself by The White Stripes. Good luck everyone.

Killing Me Softly was covered by The Fugees. Fugees is short for The Refugees. A refugee is someone who has been forced to leave their country to escape war, persecushun or other disaster. Some refugees do evenshully get to go home again but it can be a long hard journey and they needs to have faith it will appen. So, I chooses Blind Faith – Can't Find My Way Home for all those refugees who are waiting to return to their homelands.

We be inspired to do our first Lexie's chain, by da winnin tune of last week, wot was Killin Me Softly. Dat song was inspired by a Don McLean song called Empty Chairs. mum know dis cos Don McLean was da first concert Mum went to. (Although she not tell anyone at skool, cos it not cool in 1984.) Wiv dis bein our first week, to get idea of wot anipals do for da chain, we readed da last few weeks but couldn't find any empty chairs. Most weeks seem to have lots of bums on seats an da chain seem popular, altho we did go froo it fast like lightning. So da song we choose is Chain Lightning by Don McLean. We ave ad a look at video an find him not move like lightning, an we not fink it very cool in 2013 neiver, but it is our linky for da week.

This is my first ever attempt at the chain, so I'm hoping I has got things right and the judge is feeling kind :-). So the winner last week was the lovely Killing Me Softly With His Song by Roberta Flack. I do love this song, although not when mauled about by a certain Mr Hugh Grant in the film About a Boy. Anyways, I'm sure you all know that the song was written by Norman Gimbel and composed by Charles Fox; two very clever peoples. In 1954 Norman Gimbel wrote the English lyrics to a Spanish song written and recorded by Pablo Beltrán Ruiz called "?Quién será?". He then rather cleverly got an actor dude and member of the famous Rat Pack to record that English version. So for my linky I gives you Sway as sung by Mr Dean Martin.

Last weeks winner chosen by @skye613 was the lovely Roberta Flack singing Killing Me Softly, much head scratching I kept thinking of another multi talented singer/actress Eartha Kitt, I have selected C'est si bon. a beautiful romantic song.

Last week's winning song was Killing me Softly by Roberta Flack. I don't know how you would kill someone softly and these words seem to conflict with each other. And I don't think anyone should be killing anyone else no matter how softly. I think we should all live and let live. However, talking of conflicting words this made me think of a band called Guns n' Roses and a song they sang called Live and Let Die. So many conflicts, Guns bad, Roses good, Living good, Dying bad. So apologies for causing such conflict but my link this week is Live & Let Die by Guns n' Roses.

Congrats to @Skye613 on first win! One ob many to come me fink. We did see dat Roberta Flack did teach English & music in Washington DC. One ob da places she did teach was Browne Junior High School. Me noticed dat it Browne wif an e da same as Jackson Browne. Ms. Roberta Flack and Jackson Browne boaf play da piano. Boaf ob dem hab great hits, lots ob awards, and boaf hab done songs for films and TV, and dey is active in various charitable and humanitarian causes. The song "Killing me softly" always makes me think of the off-key version sung by Nicholas Hault in the film About a Boy. The song doesn't appear on the soundtrack sadly as all the songs are sung by Badly Drawn Boy. Badly Drawn Boy's best work came on the previous album The Hour of the Bewilderbeest. My favourite song on this album is Pissing into the Wind which just might be what you'd do if someone was trying to kill you softly.

Wow. 2 winners again. Well done, well done. The winner be "sound of Silence" written by Paul Simon. A song described by @diamondbertie as one of longing & loneliness. Simon did graduate from college with a degree in English. As did Roberta Flack who taught English & music in Washing, D.C. for many years. Miss Roberta covered " A Bridge Over Troubled Waters " written by Paul Simon. My link suggestion this week for Lexieschain is "Killing Me Softly" by Roberta Flack.

Hi Lexie another week gone in a flash. So Clapton chose The Sound of Silence by Paul Simon and there were two worthy winners. My link is based on the word sound and the name Paul. The Jam were one of my fave bands when younger. They were led of course by Paul Weller. The last album they released was Sound Effects. So I have chosen from that album the song That's Entertainment which is what we get from all our Twitter pals. There you go.

Last week's pick was Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel. Some have said that Paul Simon wrote that song about the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny) was written by Bernie Taupin and Elton John as a tribute to John Lennon, who was also assassinated. In addition, when I listen to both songs they seem to have a similar theme of loss, sadness, emptiness.

Last week was sounds of silence. Hmm ok let me fink. In the song we hear the lyrics people talking without speaking, people hearing without listening. So, to me, it means you can say so much without saying anything at all. In fact, you can sometimes enjoy the silence. Oh, what's that? Words are very unnecessary, they can only do harm - enjoy the silence! Why what a great linky - it's Depeche Mode of course and Enjoy The Silence.

The joint winners chose “The Sound of Silence” by Simon & Garfunkel / Paul Simon. This made me think of “Silence is Golden” by The Four Seasons as my linky but I decided to go with the cover version by The Tremeloes instead.

Last week we had an iconic song from the 60's with The Sound of Silence. This week my choice it's another iconic song from the same era. The Sound of Silence is a funny title that makes you think because, of course, silence had no sound. Another song title that makes you think is A Whiter Shade of Pale which, again, you can't really get..can you? See, even I'm confused. So my choice this week is the epic Whiter Shade of Pale by Procol Harum.

Wow, this is a difficult one! We did read that Mr Bob Dylan did add electric instruments and drums to Sounds of Silence wivout Simon & Garfunkel’s permission and we did wonder wot other songs had been added to like dat. Mum did then have a brainwave – well it would have been one if it had been correct! She always fort that the strings and stuff on True Love Ways by Buddy Holly had been added after he died, but according to the interwebnet fing, he recorded it wiv the orchestra. Ah well, wot can you do! Here it is anyway:

We does hab “Sound of Silence” by Simon and Garfunkel to linky. Well, me does say da link dis week be Cathy’s Clown by da Everly Brothers. Simon and Garfunkel did aspire to imitate da harmony ob da Everly Brothers. Paul Simon did write Sounds of Silence and Phil and Don Everly did write Cathy’s Clown. Da Everly Brothers also sang backing vocals on da title track from da Graceland album wif Paul Simon. Dey was also da featured act for Simon & Garfunkle’s Old Friends Reunion Tour. All dese fings is what links dem.

I been thinkin that Paul Simon did make da album most brilliant called Graceland. Graceland as we all know is howse dat Elvis da pelvis Presley did live in. Elvis did have first film role in King Creole in 1958, dis was based on Harold Robbins book called..... A stone for Danny Fisher. Hello Miss Lexie, last week the very wise judge chose the Sound of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel…..we listened to it closely and we are pretty sure it was not the sound of silence and was actually quite noisy all the way through…so this week our choice is 4'33 by John Cage….its only the sound of silence for 4 minutes and 33 seconds…..

Congratulations to the two Bs: Baxter and Bertie on their lovely song choice Sounds of Silence. My linky shall be The Winner Takes It All by Abba. Why? Well, because Anni-Frid Lyngstad made a cover-version of Sounds of Silence in Swedish before joining Abba. Sounds of Silence was written about the despair people felt after the JFK assassination, The Winner Takes it All also deals with heartache but in the aftermath of a divorce. Different inspirations but both magnificent songs.

Well dun two Claptun and wat a lovlee song Mr Jones by Counting Crows bee. I starts at Dat fer me entrie dis week. I gets Pa's help and he says dat da firstest Mr Jones he heers of was Davy Jones of da Monkees fame. His favorite Monkees song bee I'm a Believer wat we all no was in da movie Shrek but sung by Smash Mouth Dat time.

But anyway, on da soundtrack waz Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, a masterpiece by da way. We den find Dat he do a cover of Sounds of Silence like a poem

Morning Lexie chain suggestion time again. Well done to Clapton Terrier last week a worthy winner. It's the Mr Jones link that got me thinking this week. A very famous Mr Jones is if course Tom Jones. One of his biggest hits was What's New Pussy Cat. Of course cats are not as good as dogs but they are not too bad. So my choice for this week is what's New Pussy Cat by Mr Tom Jones.

Well dun to da Clapton Terrier for his very furst win on da Lexieschainy! We had some proud paws in dis house for you. So we been thinking away about dem crows wot count and da songy Mr Jones but it isn't gonna be a surprise dat we doing wid an easee linky Sheryl Crow.

Why? Cause not only does she have da same last name, she did do background singy winging for da Counting Crows on da album Hard Candy's song American Girls. And, Mr Jones was kinda about wanting to be happy wid a girl so we going wid da songy 'All I wanna do'. Hit it, cauz dis ain't no disco, dis be LA....

Hmm, we has to fink of a link from Mr Jones by Counting Crows ... Well we did look them up and found out that there are different theories about the meaning of the lyrics to this song. It seems it may have been about wanting to be famous, but in later years the band changed some of the lyrics when they were singing it on tour, and they also included the first verse from “So you want to be a rock ‘n’ roll star” by The Byrds many times. So this more cynical look at fame is what we’re going wiv and a song that is very much to the point about that is “Rock ‘n’ Roll Star” by Oasis.

Clever Clapton did leave us searching for linky to Mr. Jones by Counting Crows. Now it seem to me dat da hardest part ob #lexieschain ebery week is picking ONE ob all da possible linkies out dere. (Well, dat is unless you win and den hab to pick da next winner... DAT is da hardest part ob da whole game!) But back to dis week and da linky... Mr. Jones was from da first album by Counting Crows and was dere first hit song. Earlier dat same year dey did fill in for Van Morrison at da Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and played a cover ob Morrison’s “Caravan”. Counting Crows does say dat Van Morrison is one ob da influences ob deyse music and Van Morrison’s first hit song from his first solo album (after he played wif da band Them) is me linky! Me gib you “Brown Eyed Girl” by Van Morrison. (Dis da uncensored version dat say *gasp, blush* “making love”.) Dis came to me while listening to Mr. Jones and hear at da beginning dey does sing “Sha la la la la la la...” like Morrison sings in Brown Eyed Girl.

Your dad did make an excellent choicey last week. Hmmm, Counting Crows..... I do believe Avery Millard Powers III ( love dat name) is their bass player. He used to be in a band called The Semantics with Zak Starkey, son of Beatles drummer Ringo Starr. Therefore: this week I choo choo choose 'I am the Walrus' aka 'I am the Terrier' by The Beatles.

A lot of head scratching went on here, the winner last week was Mr Jones by The Counting Crows, I never heard it before so I had to listen to it many times. It was really a song of loneliness and longing. So here goes I offer Simon and Garfunkel's The Sound of Silence a beautiful song about longing and loneliness.

Counting Crows – Mr Jones did win last week and we takin or inspriatins from da line Mr Jones strikes up a conversation with a black haired flamenco dancer who dus be Spanish!They also sometimes known as Spanish Rose coz they are bootiful and sexy ladies!
