Lexie's Chain: The Hundred and Twenty Third Chain

Hello pals! Welcome to week 123 of #lexieschain. Last week the winner was Tucker wiv Lynyrd Skynyrd an Simple Man. Let's see wot we got dis week!

And pals, please to to note that we has no broadband coz BT is rubbidge and won't climb a telegraph pole to do the cable til the 10th June! So you gonna get disrupted service from da Lexie for a bit! We gots a 3g mobile dongle (that is not rude) now so we can use it at ome lata.

Right so, ere we goes:

@claptonterrier
Mr Kelso chose a song by Lynrd Skynrd last week. I read that in 1970 the group actually chose the name "Leonard Skinner", a mocking tribute to a physical-education teacher called Leonard Skinner who was notorious for strictly enforcing their school's policy against boys having long hair. The name became changed over time to Lynrd Skynrd. That got me thinking about other bands who are named after real people. There are bands lIke Franz Ferdinand, named after the Duke, and Pink Floyd who were named when, Syd Barrett mixed the names of two blues musicians he loved, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. However, the one we really like is Rilo Kiley, which it turns out, is a name randomly picked out of a Scottish Sports Almanac. And so we have selected their song "Portions for Foxes".

@freddie_bt
Our linky fer dis week comes not fwom last week's song as such but fwom da life n times of Lynrd Skynrd. Various members suffered fwom da sadly common vices of da music industry n tragically several members of da band died in an air crash. Many musicians have died in plane crashes n abused drugs n alcohol but Dad only knows of one who died on a plane n dat was Paul Kossoff who suffered a fatal heart attack aged 25 on a flight fwom LA to NY, his death was due largely to his history of drug abuse. We's not goin fer da obvious choice fer Kossoff of "All Right Now", which its estimated is played on a radio station somewhere evwy 45 seconds but fer an instrumental track fwom his largely forgotten solo LP "Back Street Crawler". It was recorded in 1973 when fwends, including da uvva members of Free rallied round to help him wecover fwom his sewious drug pwoblems, he had by this time aged just 22 alweady been resuscitated once.

Da piece we av selected is "Time Away" which features some of Kossoff's most moving guitar playing including his trademark vibrato sound dat many av twied n failed to imitate, Clapton asked Koss to teach him how to pwoduce da sound. Should you want to hear pain n suffering expressed in music den Koss's mournful guitar on "Time Away" pwobly articulates it better dan most but it stands as a beautiful piece of music regardless of da personal experiences dat inspired it. After Paul's death his father da actor David Kossoff spent much of his time touring schools presenting a talk warning of the dangers of drugs while also celebrating da talents of his son, search YouTube for Late Great Paul Kossoff and you can find da talk split into 5 parts. It is beautifully delivered by a fine actor.

@skye613
Congrats to Tucker for another great win. Woo Hoo Southern Rock ! Lynyrd Skynyrd was originally named The Noble Five in 1965. In '70 they renamed to Leonard Skinner as a play on a high school gym teacher's name. The spelling was changed after their first album was released. Said teacher was known to hassle boys with long hair. One of the founders of the group, Gary Rossington, quit school to avoid the continuing problems with his hair. My link this week: CSNY " Almost Cut My Hair "

@bvfeyj
Eben tho me did win wif Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd so me does be judging and not hafta do a linky... me hab one anyway! Me do not know if da Yardbirds is simple but at least we knows dey can spell man... M-A-N. LOL so dat is me linky

@smcheetham
Last weeks winner was Tucker with Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynrd so what to follow on from that. As ever I go for the words and the names to get my link as that's what works for me. So this week I have used the word Simple to get me from Simple Man to Simple Minds who before they went all stadium I liked back in the day. So which one to choose well as we have finally had some sun this long weekend in the UK I have gone for Someone Somewhere in Summertime so that's my link Simple Minds with Someone Somewhere in Summertime. Thanks all and Thanks Lexie

@djladylexie
Lynyrd Skynyrd you cod argue has no vowels in their name! (if you dus believe that Y is not a vowel that is). So that got me finkin bowt uvva bands wifout vowels in their name! One of our faves dus be a great band most poplar in late 70's and the 80's for their punky new wave sound wot comes from Swindon. A very strange and wonderous place wiv noffink to show for its name apart from XTC and well erm ….. Oh dear not much else! Anway, dat be our linky, annuva band wifout vowels SXT and their fantastic song Making Plans For Nigel, who you cuould say, was a simple man!

@bunnersandharvs
So dat Tucker is on supa form wif dat choicy wif last week's Lexieschainy win! It was a logical songy wot led him to simple songy which leads us to think dat most songs is like a 'key to life'. So dese paws started tappin to dat album by Stevie Wonder 'Songs in the key of life'. We couldn't find da whole album so we thort we would go wif da songy 'Knocks me off my feet'. ok maybe not so simple but we dus love dis songy anyway. Hee hee...

@diamondbertie
Mamma Mia by Abba. Why?. Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd sang about their mother.

Ere what Tucker said: Wow! So many great links and great songs! Me did especially like Portions for Foxes and Time Away with da awesome guitar playing ob Kossoff which was so expressive. But wif Mom being an old hippie chick and da clever link, me does pick Linky 3  CSNY "Almost Cut My Hair". Dat dis week's winner!

Now is time to get your finkin caps on an send me (find out how on da guidelines page fing) the next link in the chain. Da winner dis week dus be pickin da winner next week and dat means you Skye.

It's over to you! Email me: lexie at toxicpenguin dot com or DM me on twitter (@dogstoyevsky) wiv your link suggestion followin on from dis one! You has until noon (GMT) Sunday 2 June 2013 (gots to get it to me by 2pm UK time if poss). Oh sometimes I dus accidentally delete em! Heehee. So good idea to type DO NOT DELETE in the title!

Lexie's Chain dus be inspired by da pawsome Radcliffe & Maconie Show wot you can has a listen to on dere website. Follow me @dogstoyevsky or #lexieschain on Twitter to join da fun. Remember anyfink goes! Rock, classical, opera, ballads, punk, reggae - is up to you! Fanx for playin!

Lexie's Chain: The Hundred and Twenty Second Chain

Hello pals! Welcome to week 122 of #lexieschain. Last week the winner was Kelso wiv Ramp by Scooter. Let's see wot we got dis week!

@freddie_bt
Dad missed da hints to select Techno or Dance music last week otherwise he'd have selected Underworld. Anyways on to da finkin fer dis week's linky, we looked at Scooter n thought dis is a noisy often irritatable form of transport as indeed is da Camel n dis made Dad's choice simple. It is a piece of music which has a Techno feel is defnitly Chill Out n also has a trance like quality because of its Middle Eastern n North African elements inlcuding the Oud. The music was composed, played n produced by the Spy From Cairo aka Zeb real name Moreno Visini who wuz raised in Italy n lives n works in New York as a club DJ n recording artist. Dad luvs da way he blends modern electronic music wiv traditional chants n instruments, so here's our linky da beautifully hauntin "Ride My Camel" by Spy From Cairo.

@skye613
Congrats to @kelsoterrier Great win! Another Oh what a week! Spent the time learning about Eurovision. Who knew Abba & Celine Dion Winners! And guess what me watched the semi-finals second round on Friday. Yes! It's Eurovision 2013 from Malmo. Ding Dong...." I wanna be sedated " The Ramones be ma link.

@diamondbertie
Last week's winner of the chain was Ramp (the logical song) by Scooter, I defy anyone listening to this and not smiling and tapping their feet. My choice is another such fun piece is Popcorn by Hot Butter.

@bvfeyj
GREAT link, Kelso! You da dog! Me does hab to say to Lexie’s dad, Ha! Ha! dis easy one to link to! It dun comed to me in a blinding flash! So let me ‘splain... Kelso did gib us Ramp! (The Logical Song) by Scooter. (To me great surprise me did like it!) Still, it ravver loosely based on da Logical Song by Supertramp and does use some ob da lyrics from dat great song which in itself could be a link. But me not chose da easy link ob Supertramp’s Logical Song- NO! Me does fink about da lyrics dey does quote and da rest ob Roger Hodgson’s lyrics including da great line “The questions run too deep for such a simple man...” So me chose “Simple Man” by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Take dat, Lexie’s dad! Dis ain’t no techno!

@wonderwinger
Looking for a Eurovision themed entry linking to Scooter was a bit tricky, but then I thought I know I'll whip off the -ter replace them with a -ch. What have we got? Only SCOOCH! Yes that's right Scooch who were the UK Eurovision entry in 2007 with "Flying The Flag (For You)". Of course, to scooch means to scoot over and some urban dictionaries state it comes from "scoot your tush" as in to very quickly move your bottom a tiny bit.

@bunnersandharvs
Well dun to you Kelso fur your win AGIN dis week. We has had a rilly tuff time on dis linky so all we could go wif was dat scooter and wot it dus which is take you here and der sooooo our linky dis week dus be da Staple Singers I'll Take You There. BOL!

@smcheetham
Bit late here hope I don't miss the cut. Have to be quick. Scooters ramp made me think of scooters that mods ride on. Quadrophenia by the Who was their mod opera my favourite song by The Who is 5 15 so that's my very rushed suggestion. Good luck all.

@claptonterrier
Hello Miss Lexie…I am very sorry I did not have a chance to pawticipate in last week's Chain….someone *ahem* was off on a boy's weekend abroad….anyhoo, we saw that mr Kelso was the winner last week with Ramp! by Scooter. In this house, scooters are not German techno nerds but a way of travelling…that's right, we are talking about scooters and mopeds and motorbikes…so this week our link is "Unknown Legend" by Neil Young…the chorus says

Somewhere on a desert highway
She rides a Harley-Davidson
Her long blonde hair
Flyin' in the wind
She's been runnin' half her life
The chrome and steel she rides
Collidin' with
The very air she breathes
The air she breathes.

Someone round here would like to have ago at doing that….but has to settle for going to the station on his Vespa….*makes "Loser" L on forehead*….

@djladylexie
Hmmm so many choices .. Ramps! Scooters! Logic!! Am going wiv scooters. Who loves scooters? Mods that's who! What is greatest mod movie of all time? Quadrophenia of course (errr think it was the only mod movie!!). Famous for his role in the movie was Phil Daniels playing Jimmy, a mod who has an awesome Lambretta scooter. Phil Daniels also dun a right good bit of singing (well talking really) on the Parklife single so that is ma linky! Parklife . Blur.

@rosieterrier
Well done Kelso on your win last weeky. Well, hmmm. Ramp huh? I fink of Mark Ramprakash cos dat be his nickname. So I choose 'Let's Get Loud' by Jennifer Lopez coz that's what he danced his Cha Cha Cha to on Strictly Come Dancing. *sways of on balls of pads, twisting hips*.

An ............. da winner dis week .... as chosen by @kelsoterrier  ............. dus be ................ @bvfeyj (Tucker) wiv Simple Man by Lynrd Skynrd! Yay!!!

Now is time to get your finkin caps on an send me (find out how on da guidelines page fing) the next link in the chain. Da winner dis week dus be pickin da winner next week and dat means you Tucker.

It's over to you! Email me: lexie at toxicpenguin dot com or DM me on twitter (@dogstoyevsky) wiv your link suggestion followin on from dis one! You has until noon (GMT) Sunday 26 May 2013 (gots to get it to me by 2pm UK time if poss).

Lexie's Chain: The Hundred and Twenty First Chain

Hello pals! Welcome to week 121 of #lexieschain. Last week the winner was me wiv Satellite of Love by Lou Reed. So lets see wot we got dis week.

@diamondbertie
Last week the winner was Satellite of Love by Lou Reed I put my thinking cap on, I listened to the song very carefully the lady in question was THE satellite of love. I thought of earlier satellites and one of the first was Telstar, this captured the imagination of everyone and the Tornados brought out the single Telstar. That is my choice, Telstar by the Tornados.

@bvfeyj
Me does fink dere be a very obvious link dis week and me hope we not hab a dozen ob dis entry.. We is linking to Lexie's brilliant winner "Satellite of Love" by Lou Reed. My link does be a song dat was #1 in boaf da US & UK. Me say what better link dan a song dat was composed and named fur a satellite! Telstar by The Tornados.

@terenceterrier
Your winning linky was “Satellite Of Love” by Lou Reed wot be a favorite of mums. So I choose for my linky “Telstar” by The Tornados. It iz an instrumental track wiv space sounds on it about the Telstar communications satellite wot woz launched shortly before dis track was writted. It woz da best selling single of 1962 & we haz it in da record rack *proud ears*. Dis probly be da prototype techo track (take note Lexie’s Dad). Telstar 1 & 2 are still in orbit so give them a paw wave as they goes past.

@freddie_bt
Da inspirashun for "Satellite of Love" came fwom Lou Reed watching a space satellite launch on tv. David Bowie sang backing vocals on da song n he also starred in a film about an alien from space called "The Man Who Fell to Earth" which wuz directed by Nic Roeg. Big Audio Dynamite da band which Mick Jones formed after leaving da Clash recorded a song called "E=MC2" which wuz about Nic Roeg films including wefewences to "Performance" which provided da sampled vocals, "Don't Look Now" n "The Man Who Fell to Earth" which features prominently in the song's video. So here's our linky "E=MC2" by Big Audio Dynamite. Sadly tho Don Letts still looks da same Mick Jones is no longer the sneering punk rocker but looks like he's impersonating Arthur, Olive's husband in On the Buses for anyone dat wemembers da old sitcom.

.

@skye613
Congrats to Lexie Again. You rock this game. "Satellite of Love" was released on Transformer in 1972. The album was produced by David Bowie & Mick Ronson who was the lead guitarist for Bowie at that time. 1972 also saw the release of Bowie's The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.

Ziggy Stardust was a concept album of a spaceman sending messages to the world through a rock star. Supposedly Bowie created Ziggy as a blending of the persona of Iggy Pop & the music of Lou Reed. Starman.

@bunnersandharvs
Well dun to da supa star Lexie. She is a cleva paw! So we been thinking bout dat LouLou Reed and Venus & furs and transformers and satellites and wot not. Sooo afta all dat we thort dis our seleckshun and da why is furst: did you know dat David Bowie did produce dat Transformers album fur Lou? He did and well David Bowie dus also be one dat dus be as diverse as dey come in da moosic wurld and da other pawts of da universe too - hee hee. So da singy a songy we going wif dis week is ..... 'Life On Mars'. Yay!!

@smcheetham
Hi everyone well done Lexie for winning with Lou Reed now lots of clues given that we should choose techno to secure a win. I am afraid that defeated me so gone in another direction entirely. I have used the fact that LouReed was in Velvet Underground as was John Cale and my fave song by John Cale is Fear is a Mans Best Friend so that's my suggestion.

@kelsoterrier
Hmm, satellite of love you say. Ok, well two doggies who were very much in love were lady and the tramp. Tramp rhymes with ramp and if the tramp had a ramp and superpowers he may be able to visit a satellite in space - he would be a supertramp. One of supertramp's most famous songs was The Logical Song. This link is not logical but it leads me to Scooter's song wot be Ramp! (The Logical Song) ;-)

@wonderwinger
Aha Lexie, it was noted that there was a request from the judge to link Lou Reed up with something dancey, technoey or Girls Aloudy. Ever the "obedient" paw I shall of course oblige.

My link is Out of Space by The Prodigy. The reason being Satellites whether they be Love ones, spy ones or TV ones all live in Outer Space. If you come from Souf' Eas' Lundun, like my humum, Out er Space would be how you'd pronounce the title (although she went to Pony Club so learnt poshspeak).

An ............. da winner dis week .... as chosen by dad ............. dus be ................ @kelsoterrier wiv Ramp! The linky made him laugh out loud an of course is a blindin bit of techno (his words). Plus (wiv an evil dad laugh) he said how on earth can any of your pals find a link to that!!!!

Dad said he was torn between the linky wot he chosed and of course, his beloved Prodigy! He had a good dance round to dat one anyway ;). so a very close second for Briar!

Now is time to get your finkin caps on an send me (find out how on da guidelines page fing) the next link in the chain. Da winner dis week dus be pickin da winner next week and dat means you again Kelso.

It's over to you! Email me: lexie at toxicpenguin dot com or DM me on twitter (@dogstoyevsky) wiv your link suggestion followin on from dis one! Might be slight delay as we is movin dat weekend! You has until noon (GMT) Sunday 19 May 2013 (gots to get it to me by 2pm UK time if poss).

Lexie's Chain: The Hundred and Twentieth Chain

Hello pals! Welcome to week 120 of #lexieschain. Last week the winner was Freddie with Half Man Half Biskit! A tough linky to follow I finks. So lets see wot we got dis week.

@bvfeyj
Ob course me concatulate @freddie_bt on outstanding first win, but me must confess when me read da entry and listened to da song me was at a loss. Me did like da song a lot, but me not unnerstand a word ob it. Den me finked it must be some foreign language or *British* which about da same fing, so me naturally did rush to da interwebs fur translation. Dere me find out dat HMHB do be known for parody ob many styles and hab done covers ob many disparate artists from Edith Piaf to The Beach Boys. Dey is know for allusions to distinctly British popular culture and geography. Dis begin to make sense to me. So me grabbed onto da concept ob parody and satire which me knows an said to meself, “Self, who do we know dat do dem kinda songs?” Seberal immediately camed to mind, but me did chose an American *cultural icon* wif a bery American parody.
“Craigslist” by Weird Al Yankovic

@kelsoterrier
Great winning song last week, really off the wall. Half Man Half Biscuit will, I'm sure, lead to lots of Gingerbread Man references coz it is half man & half biscuit....or is it just me that thinks that way? Anyway I can't think of anything else so I am going for a Gingerbread Man link. In the Gingerbread Man song he "run, run, runs as fast as he can" which makes me think of the Foster The People Song when people are advised "you better run, better run, faster than my bullet"....which is good advice :-) So that's my link, Foster The People with Pumped Up Kicks.

@smcheetham
Hello and well done to Freddie for winning on only his second week. Inspired choice of half man half biscuit one of my faves. They provide a rich seam to mine from. One of their other songs is Joy Division Oven Gloves which satirises merchandising within music. So easy therefore to chose the classic Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division. Good luck all.

@skye613
What a week! I been storming around the house trying to figure out a linky. Brilliant win @freddie_bt! Dis be very hard oh my. Then it came to me like a lightening bolt, This all about games. "Games without Frontiers" my link today. This is a remix with Kate Bush. Enjoy !

@diamondbertie
Last weeks chain was Half Man Half Biscuit who sand All I want For Christmas is a Dukla Prague Away Kit. Now this was ever so hard, the lyrics were about problems with scalextric and subutteo things I know nothing about.

So I cheated I looked into iTunes for ideas, my simple mind went to horse racing and I came up with the film National Velvet with Elizabeth Taylor. One of the themes was Greensleeves played by Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

@borderpup
So we has to make a linky from HMHB - dat's a first! Mum had forgotten all about them, so she went on a trip down memry lane .... meanwhile, I was trying to fink. Wot they said they wanted for Christmas was a Dukla Prague away kit. Parrently they was a famuss footie team in Prague, who did win the cup in 1990 after the Velvet Revolution. 'Velvet?' I hear you say; 'Underground' I reply, and go off on a complete tangent. Lou Reed was in Velvet Underground, and then he went solo, and one of his songs is 'Perfect Day'. I choose the vershun sung by him and lots of other people:

@wonderwinger
A fantastic first chainy win by @Freddie_bt Giving us Half Man Half Biscuit and their song "All I Want For Christmas is a Dukla Prague kit". Well as soon as i saw that title my link dropped into my brain like a penny falling from heaven. My selection is the double A sided single by Wham "Last Christmas" & "Everything She Wants". Off the wall George Michael could on occasion be described as a bit half man half nutty cookie. Bless him.

@claptonterrier
Hello Miss Lexie…we are dashing around to get ready for #BTSurrey today but we have not forgotten to pick our link. I see that Mr Freddie chose a song all about a football team….so this is obviously my cue to bring out Gazza again….no, wait…that didn't go so well last time….so instead I will pick a song by a band who were named after a football team…The Kaiser Chiefs…who are named after the South African team Kaizer Chiefs…and we have selected their song…I Predict a Riot…because that is what we are expecting at #BTSurrey today….

@bunnersandharvs
So furst of all, we says a big well dun to Freddie fur da furst win of da chainy. Dat wus a great slecshun and tuff competishun too. So den we ben thinking bout dis songy and wot did we say well if someone into dem Scalextrics der is only one linky fur us and dat is

Racing Cars - Hard Working Woman. We thort da songy was right cause in da HMFB songy dey was makin der Mum work hard so we thort dat said it all. *snaps paws*

@rosieterrier
Well done to Freddie, dat was a totally brilliant linky last week. I have a quick link today. I went with the biscuity foody connection and have given it a canine focus! So my link is 'Hot Meat Pies, Saveloys And Trotters' *Drools* by Harry Champion. Enjoy.
(Ed: Sorry had to do the Chas n Dave version as coddnt find Harry's one)

@freddie_bt
Dad n I wuz most supwised to win. Half Man Half Biscuit fwom Merseyside n da Norf West of England which pwoduces lots of gweat music. N chosen wuz verwy difficult but we has picked A Certain Ratio performin Flight. Dey is fwom Manchester but wen Channel4 asked HMHB to appear on The Tube dey refused coz dey wiz goin to watch Tranmere Rovers play. The Tube wiz a live broadcast n A Certain Radtio stepped in at da last minute to take der place. That's our link.

@impiborderterrier
I onlee jus fawt of one - march of da trolls by edwud Grieg.

@djladylexie
Their album Back in the DHSS features a song wot called Venus In Fiares wot is a play on werds wiv da Velvet Underground song wot called Venus in Furs, written by Lou Reed. Venus of course does be the Godess of Love so ma linky does be Love and Lou Reed. So I chooses Lou Reed, Satellite of Love for ma linky.

An ............. da winner dis week .... as chosen by Freddie dus be ................ @djladylexie wiv Satellite of Love by Lou Reed. Oh is me! Pffttttt. Ere wot Freddie said:

We did like all da Linkys n how people takes it off in different directions. Special menshuns to Linky No 1 coz we laughs at Weird Al n hadn't heard dis song, also to No 3 as its one of Dad's favwite songs fwom one of his favwite bands n he nearly chose Joy Division fer his linky. Dad also had laugh at Boiled Beef and Carrots, made him fink of old tv show "The Good Old Days". Intewestin dat 2 peoples awwived at Lou Reed n both songs fwom Transformer too. Dad wud av liked to award it to bofe Linky No 6 n 13 but pwefers Satellite of Love to Perfect Day n also liked da cryptic finkin. So dis week's winner is Linky No 13 wiv Satellte of Love by Lou Reed.

Now is time to get your finkin caps on an send me (find out how on da guidelines page fing) the next link in the chain. Da winner dis week dus be pickin da winner next week and dat means you the dad.

It's over to you! Email me: lexie at toxicpenguin dot com or DM me on twitter (@dogstoyevsky) wiv your link suggestion followin on from dis one! You has until noon (GMT) Sunday12 May 2013 (gots to get it to me by 2pm UK time if poss).
