Lexie's Chain: The Hundred and Forty Third Chain

Hello pals! Welcome to week 143 of #lexieschain. 

This is a chain I am dussin wiv a heavy heart. One of our best players - Tucker - disappeared and stopped playin the chainy. Well, we was all worried but we knew his mum was starting up a new antiques business so put his disappearance down to that.

Sadly, somefink was naggin at mum about it. Joyce Dean (Tucker's mum) would never just disappear. Mum did some digging and sadly came across Joyce's obituary online. 

Joyce was fantastic at The Chain and Tucker was crowned The Chain Champ of 2012 - they taught me a lot about music and their linkies were legendary. So, here's to you Joyce and Tucker. RIP dear lady and enjoy the rest of your life with her brother Tucker. We love and miss you both.  Now lets raise a glass to Tucker and Joyce.

Poor Briar had the unenviable task of choosing this weeks' winner in such sad circumstances. So let's see the entries.

I'm keeping the rainbow theme with a song from the film Finians Rainbow sung by Fred Astaire and and Petula Clark called Look to the Rainbow. I was careful to avoid Somewhere Over The Rainbow.

Last week Briar won wiv Zippy and “Rainbow Mix”. Annuver cult childrens TV show woz The Magic Roundabout. One of the charachers woz Dylan who woz named after Bob Dylan. Well done @wonderwinger. " The Rainbow Theme." Last weeks winner of course takes us directly to " Somewhere...." At the end of the rainbow is a pot of gold, they tell me. Have not been able to verify this conjecture. But after hearing about Tuckers Mom, Eva Cassidy sings of " Fields of Gold. " Here's hoping Tuckers Mom is romping through those fields of gold to the end of the rainbow.

Well Done Briar with your link of the Rainbow Theme i remember the programme well. My link is based on the word Rainbow. The term 'Rainbow Nation' was coined by Archbishop Desmond Tutu to describe post apartheid South Africa following Nelson Mandela's election as President. That took me to that great 80s Anthem Free Nelson Mandela written by the great Jerry Dammers and The Specials so thats my rainbow link Free Nelson Mandela by The Specials AKA.

Oh dear Miss Lexie…we can hardly bring ourself to do our Chain this week after hearing about Mr Tucker's mum. He was the king of this little game wasn't he? I expect she would want us to carry on and so this week we shall play in their honour …Lady Briar chose the theme from Rainbow. In 1979, the cast and crew of Rainbow made a special exclusive sketch for the Thames TV staff Christmas tape, sometimes referred to as the "Twangers" episode. This sketch featured plenty of naughty innuendo….so naughty we can't repeat it here. That made us think of Captain Pugwash, the children TV series, which people always said contained lots of similar naughty stuff which children never noticed when they watched it. That made us think about songs about pirates and the sea. So this week our link is Martha's Harbour by All About Eve...

Ere wot Briar said: I've found choosing the winner harder than ever this week. Previously as a judge, I've often had an idea of the sort of link that I'd select as my winner before seeing any of them. However, so often Tucker's links would blow me away with their brilliance and my original plan would go out of the window. Tucker was and always will be the King of the Chain and i was touched by how he was so gracious in handing his crown to me. Through Joyce's selections I've discovered some great music and for that I'll be eternally grateful. 

I've was greatly moved by Linky no. 6 as I'm a sentimental soul and that little green frog gets me every time. I love how #lexieschain connects us so this link is in 2nd place. My 1st choice in tribute to the King of the Chain is King of Songwriters Bob Dylan, so ably accompanied by that man with glasses on guitar (he can play a bit).  Linky no.2 - Don't Think Twice it's Alright is my winner

Ob course me concatulate @freddie_bt on outstanding first win, but me must confess when me read da entry and listened to da song me was at a loss. Me did like da song a lot, but me not unnerstand a word ob it. Den me finked it must be some foreign language or *British* which about da same fing, so me naturally did rush to da interwebs fur translation. Dere me find out dat HMHB do be known for parody ob many styles and hab done covers ob many disparate artists from Edith Piaf to The Beach Boys. Dey is know for allusions to distinctly British popular culture and geography. Dis begin to make sense to me. So me grabbed onto da concept ob parody and satire which me knows an said to meself, “Self, who do we know dat do dem kinda songs?” Seberal immediately camed to mind, but me did chose an American *cultural icon* wif a bery American parody.

Great winning song last week, really off the wall. Half Man Half Biscuit will, I'm sure, lead to lots of Gingerbread Man references coz it is half man & half biscuit....or is it just me that thinks that way? Anyway I can't think of anything else so I am going for a Gingerbread Man link. In the Gingerbread Man song he "run, run, runs as fast as he can" which makes me think of the Foster The People Song when people are advised "you better run, better run, faster than my bullet"....which is good advice :-) So that's my link, Foster The People with Pumped Up Kicks.

Hello and well done to Freddie for winning on only his second week. Inspired choice of half man half biscuit one of my faves. They provide a rich seam to mine from. One of their other songs is Joy Division Oven Gloves which satirises merchandising within music. So easy therefore to chose the classic Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division. Good luck all.

Last weeks chain was Half Man Half Biscuit who sand All I want For Christmas is a Dukla Prague Away Kit. Now this was ever so hard, the lyrics were about problems with scalextric and subutteo things I know nothing about.

So I cheated I looked into iTunes for ideas, my simple mind went to horse racing and I came up with the film National Velvet with Elizabeth Taylor. One of the themes was Greensleeves played by Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

So we has to make a linky from HMHB - dat's a first! Mum had forgotten all about them, so she went on a trip down memry lane .... meanwhile, I was trying to fink. Wot they said they wanted for Christmas was a Dukla Prague away kit. Parrently they was a famuss footie team in Prague, who did win the cup in 1990 after the Velvet Revolution. 'Velvet?' I hear you say; 'Underground' I reply, and go off on a complete tangent. Lou Reed was in Velvet Underground, and then he went solo, and one of his songs is 'Perfect Day'. Their album Back in the DHSS features a song wot called Venus In Fiares wot is a play on werds wiv da Velvet Underground song wot called Venus in Furs, written by Lou Reed. You chose a song by Neil Sedaka. His father, Mac Sedaka, was a taxi driver . Joni Mitchell wrote a song called Big yellow Taxi…which we like very much…and that was eventually covered by Counting Crows and Vanessa Carlton. The Counting Crows wrote a very lovely song called Mr Jones….so that is our link this week…and here is the video (complete with Spanish subtitles!!

Da links for Neil Sedaka are legion. He was prolific songwriter, who wrote for and performed wif so many ob da popular artists. He also hab a cousin who bery talented performer as well, so me does fink dat be good linky. Da hard part is deciding which song... an den me sees dat she recorded one ob Neil Sedaka’s most well known songs “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do”. Me listen to dis and fink it like a whole nother song when she do it but it still bery good, so linky dis week is Ms. Eydie Gorme wif “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do”.

Dis week we have to link to 'Oh Carol', which was written by Neil Sedaka. He and Carol King were both songwriters in the famous Brill Building in New Yoik, where lots of other songwriters and music publishers did have there offices. One of the other songwriters there was Burt Bacharach and he wrote lots of hits, including 'The Look of Love' which was a hit for our very own Dusty Springfield (it is also another love song!).

Last week we had Carol by Neil Sedaka. For my link this week I am going for another song with a girl's name in it by another Neil. This other Neil, as chance would have it, also went to the same school as Neil Sedaka (albeit a couple of years later) which was Lincoln High in Brooklyn. The song is Sweet Caroline and the singer is Neil Diamond.

Oh my goodness! dere be so many choices for dis week and good ones too so me just going to pick somefing. American Pie was written and recorded by Don McLean. His first album recorded in 1969 was called Tapestry but was not a huge success, howeber one ob da best selling albums ob all time also called Tapestry was recorded in 1971 by Carole King. All da songs was written or co-written by her. So me does suggest “Tapestry” by Carole King.

Me does like dis bideo because it list some ob da many uvver songs dat she did write fur uvver peoples, some dat you may not know she did write.

Hi Lexie Hope all well with you after your party sorry I couldn't make it I was out all night. My suggestion this week is When the Levee Breaks by Led Zeppelin. American Pie has the chorus "I went to the levee but the levee was dry" levees are the dykes they build in America to stop flooding. So the link is levees that's all.

Gosh, a chainy first, two winners! Good job Borderpup and Kelso. So, I see Don McLean......Well I automatically think of the Don McClean from the 1970's show Crackerjack! (Think 'cabbages and Kings', Basil Brush [fox---grrrrr]). Many pop stars of the time performed on Crackerjack, one of these is Abba. My linky is 'Eagle' by Abba cos it makes me feel grounded! Well done Kelso & Indy on the double win giving us American Pie and Don McLean as our 1st link of 2013. I decided to keep it simple and run with the "Pie Theme". There have been quite a few songs written about pies or rather songs pretending to be about pies but my link shall be Custard Pie by Led Zeppelin.

Led Zeppelin and Don McLean can be linked further by the fact that they both reference the song "The Book of Love" by The Monotones in their songs Rock and Roll and American Pie.
