Lexie's Chain: The Hundred and Forty First Chain

Hello pals! Welcome to week 141 of #lexieschain. Last week the winner was Bertie wiv Gloomy Sunday by Billie Holiday.. So what dus we dus av this week?

@maggietkat
We love Billie Holiday, so we couldn't make up our mind what to do. On the long list of artists who did "Gloomy Sunday", one name jumped out - Marianne Faithfull. She was credited for picking up the song in 1987. However, I decided to choose a bittersweet number from her highly acclaimed album "Broken English", "The Ballad of Lucy Jordan". For the movie lovers out there, this number was also featured in "Thelma and Louis". So, please enjoy this younger Marianne.

@kelsoterrier
Last week we had Gloomy Sunday and to try to lighten things up a bit and get away from drug/alcohol addiction and suicide my link this week is the lovely sunny cheery song Beautiful Sunday by Daniel Boone. My my my what a beautiful day, hope everyone has a great Sunday.

@terenceterrier
Last week we were told by Bertie that da winning linky “Gloomy Sunday” wos known as da suicide anthem. I pondered abowt dis and the lyric “Suicide is painless It brings on many changes and I can take or leave it as I please” floated froo my head. Dis comes from da song wot woz ritted by Jonny Mandel and Mike Altman and iz famuss for being da M.A.S.H. theme song.

@bunnersandharvs
Well dun to you Bertie fur dat win last week on da Gloomy Sunday. Da word gloom has made us think of da word Blue wot can be sad but can also be happy to. So we changing da theme with Mr Blue Bird. Yes, you gots it, we is going with an oldie but a goodie Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah. We also thort dis was a good toon cos we figure all our pals wot be OTRB dus be living der lives dis way every day. Hit it, zippityyay!

@claptonterrier
Hello Miss Lexie….Bertie chose Gloomy Sunday by Billie Holiday last week…true to form we have a gloomy Sunday morning here today but then I remember that we have the Chain to look forward to and everything seems brighter….its as though the Chain brings its own weather with it…so this week I am choosing a song about that very thing…"Weather with You" by Crowded House..

@skye613
Great link & win Bertie! To pick my link this week I chose the useless info . As Bertie told us " Gloomy Monday" is sometimes called the suicide anthem . Suicide is an extremely influential American protopunk duo. From Gang Gang Dance, Depeche Mode,Sonic Boom, & Devo to Joy Division/New Order bands have cited Suicide for influencing their music. Springsteen closed his 2006 Devils & Dust concerts with a solo keyboard cover of the 1976 Suicide single " Dream Baby Dream".

@smcheetham
Well done Bertie with your win last week of Gloomy Sunday. A fine choice. That song has often been linked with suicides given it's very sad lyrics and overall message. Another song that had similar connotations over the years is by my all time favourite band The Smiths. The song is Asleep I think it is very fine and I have decided I would like it to get played at my funeral which I am planning on being very many years away. So on that cheerful note my suggestion is Asleep by The Smiths.

@freddie_bt
Da chainy has bin focusin on da sombre n soberin side of music wecently n excellent as "Gloomy Sunday" wuz fer our linky we's lukin at Sunday as a day of rest n leisure wiv a romantic song about two lovers relaxin n jus doin as dey please on a Sunday afternoon. Ere from 1967 is a hip guy who bought all his clothes fwom da Freemans catalogue, decided he'd form a pop group n asked his school mates wot ad gone all sensible n become apprentice draughtsmen to join im, ooh dem Young Rascals finkin dey could sell records. Anyways our linky is da delishus "Groovin".

@djladylexie
Gloomy Sunday is a pretty miserable song but reminds us of a rainy Sunday afternoon, layin on da sofe, eatin cholkit an watchin movies. Sounds quite nice if you arks me. So we chooses Lazing on A Sunday Afternoon by Queen!

An da winner ............... as chosen by @diamondbertie ... dus be ...... @bunnersandharvs Harvs wiv Zipperty Doo Dah! Yay! Well dun ma pal! Oh an dat means you will be selectin the winner next week.

Ere wot Bertie said: What a great selection of links, it was a real toughie, Ghost Writer and Master had to help, in the end we (all of us) settled for link number 4,  Zip a Dee Doo Dah,  from Song of the South, there have been too many dark sad songs and this one is a real smile maker Sunday should be a day of joy and smiles and optimism.

It's over to you! Email me: lexie at toxicpenguin dot com or DM me on twitter (@dogstoyevsky) wiv your link suggestion followin on from dis one! You has until noon (GMT) Sunday 6th Octobins 2013 (gets it to me by 2pm UK time if poss). Oh sometimes I dus accidentally delete em! Heehee. So good idea to type DO NOT DELETE in the title!

Lexie's Chain dus be inspired by da pawsome Radcliffe & Maconie Show wot you can has a listen to on dere website. Follow me @dogstoyevsky or #lexieschain on Twitter to join da fun. Remember anyfink goes! Rock, classical, opera, ballads, punk, reggae - is up to you! Fanx for playin!

Lexie's Chain: The Hundred and Fortieth Chain

Hello pals! Welcome to week 140 of #lexieschain. Before we start I wud like to dedicate this chain to @gunthergrunts who we lost under tragic circumstances. This is for all his pals wot be grieving -  *bows head* - RIP Gunther ma pal.

Last week the winner was Freddie wiv Free and My Bruvva Jake. So wot dus we dus av this week?

@diamondbertie
Last week @freddie_bt chose My Brother Jake keeping the dark theme of drug/alcohol abuse, I had to choose Gloomy Sunday by Billie Holiday, sometimes referred to as the suicide anthem (useless information).

@skye613
Wow last week's win by @freddie_bt did cause me to learn so much. Thanks pal. So in my reading I found that Paul Kossoff's famous 1959 Les Paul guitar passed to a friend after his death. Another famous 1959 Les Paul is Peter Greens. Finding himself in financial trouble Green gave the guitar to Gary Moore who was a neighbor. Moore wouldn't accept it as a gift & paid Green what he had paid for the instrument. This guitar has been played by Hendrix, Jeff Beck, and Rory Gallagher among others. In 2006 it was sold to a private collector. My link is Gary Moore's cover of " I loved Another Woman" . Written by Peter Green.

@claptonterrier
hello Miss Lexie….last week the clever Mr Freddie won with My Brother Jake by Free. The last album by Free was called Heartbreaker. Another band who made use of that name was Tommy Petty & The Heartbreakers. Our favourite song by them is Free Fallin' ….so not much of a link this week but just a lovely song.

@djladylexie
One of our favourite Free songs dus be All Right Now … Free performed this at the Isle of Wight festival in 1970 wot mum's sista did nortily go to and was in big big trubble wif their dad for doin that. The festival was our version of Woodstock I spose you might say wiv nearly 700,00 people attendin. One of the uvva bands wot we does dig wot also performed at the IoW festival dus be Procol Harum (wot also appens to be from Essex yay!). Probly their most famous song of all time dus be Whiter Shade of Pale, exactly wot colour mum's dad went when he found out her sista had gone to the IoW festival heehee. So dat ma linky. We chose them performin live again at IoW 2010 to show how timeless this number is and ow good Gary Brooker is even all poshed up wiv orchestra la-de-da!

@bunnersandharvs
Well dat Freddie did have a great selekshun in last week's chainy so a big and happy well dun to him! So we been thinking about da songy last week and how sad it woz dem hoomans has got so lost whether it be through drugs or from being ill or even when dey eventually dus go OTRB, we dus miss dem. So that did get us thinking bowt da songy by Pink Floyd, 'Wish You Were Here'. Dis versun here dus be David Gilmour live. We dus also want to mention dear Gunther wot did go OTRB dis week. We will miss you too, dear pal.

@kelsoterrier
Last week's winner was Free with My Brother Jake. This made me think of other songs written about and named after people such as (My) Delilah, My Sharona and emm, My Girl. One that immediately sprung to mind though was My Michelle by Guns n Roses because it was about a friend of the bands and discussed her drug addiction and how she got herself "clean", let's hope brother Jake took the advice and sorted himself out too. My choice isn't My Michelle though, now I've linked to Guns n Roses I would like to choose another of their songs about drugs and addiction entitled Mr Brownstone. *Sings* "I used to do a little but a little wouldn't do it so a little got more and more" I think it's about sossidges ;-).

@maggietkat
Great choice with "Free" band! Lead singer Paul Rodgers accomplished much after the band including a 1993 Grammy nominated tribute album to Muddy Waters. One of the musicians on that album was Brian Setzer. Brian won a Grammy in 2000 for his version of a jazz chart "Caravan". So, please enjoy this incredible rendition of the 1930’s standard made famous by Duke Ellington.

An da winner ............... as chosen by @freddie_bt ... dus be .......@diamondbertie wiv Gloomy Sunday by Billie Holiday. Yay Bertie! Well dun ma pal! Oh an dat means you will be selectin the winner next week.

Ere wot Freddie did say: I duz find choosin vewy difficult as deres always so many gweat linkys. Dad speshully liked Linky 4 wiv da story of goin to IoW festival, Dad wud av loved dat coz of Free n The Moody Blues. Anyways as gud as dat n Linky 2 is coz we also luvs Peter Green we av selected Linky 1, Gloomy Sunday. Dad duz always like to hear new music or music he hasnt heard before n he has never weally listened to Billie Holliday despite her stature in music, he loved da song n da glorious voice. Fanks fer choosin it.

It's over to you! Email me: lexie at toxicpenguin dot com or DM me on twitter (@dogstoyevsky) wiv your link suggestion followin on from dis one! You has until noon (GMT) Sunday 29th September 2013 (gets it to me by 2pm UK time if poss). Oh sometimes I dus accidentally delete em! Heehee. So good idea to type DO NOT DELETE in the title!

Lexie's Chain: The Hundred and Thirty Ninth Chain

Hello pals! Welcome to week 139 of #lexieschain. Last week the winner was me wiv Lily Allen singin Alfie! So wot dus we dus av this week?

@diamondbertie
the winner last week was Lily Allen with Alfie, this is a song about drugs and being "high". I remember the Beatles 1967 album Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band where there was a song called Lucy in the Sky of Diamonds this of course referred to the effect of hallucinogenic drugs. If my memory serves me it was banned, but that made it a best seller. My choice of link is the Beatles' - Lucy in the Sky of Diamonds.

@freddie_bt
We ad an excellent winner wot wuz Lily Allen's song about her brother wastin his life becomin isolated n distant coz of dwugs. It made us fink of anuvva song bout a brother in similar circumstances, "My Brother Jake" written by Andy Fraser n Paul Rogers of "Free". In fact none of da band ad a brother called Jake, its really about deir guitarist an fwend Paul Kossoff who wuz already sufferin from addictions. Its a cautionary tale about da dangers of goin down a destwuctive path dat even da closest fwends n family are powerless to stop da victim takin, somefing dey all saw appen to Kossoff n nearly 40 years on dey still miss im. Unusually fer a Free song it features Andy Fraser on piano n so denies us da chemistry of Fraser's bass sparring wiv Kossoff's guitar, listen to somefing like "Mr Big" fer dat. "My Brother Jake".

@skye613
Last week the fab DJ Lexie did win with Lily Allen's " Alfie " what was a song to her brother. A plea to stop using the demon drugs. So I'm sticking with family and drugs this week . Do you know who Lily Allen's Godmother is? Why it's Angela McCluskey ! In the vid for " Take Me Out Tonight " we see the White Rabbit... Hmmm.

@smcheetham
Well done Lexie and in your birthday week as well. Sorry Lexie's Dad no techno from me. Well I have used Brothers as the link and gone for brothers in bands of which there are many The Kinks, Oasis etc etc. one of my favourite bands The National has two sets of brothers so they win the brothers in bands prize. One of their best songs I think is Fake Empire so that's my suggestion Fake Empire by The National. This chain suggestion has been sent from the #ehuptweetup in Yorkshire where much fun was had by all.

@bunnersandharvs
Well is so cool dat Lexie did win da chainy last week, not only cos it was a great linky but
cos it was hur birfyday week too! So dat songy by Lily Allen, Alfie bowt hur borfur made us  think about families in general and den families dat did sing together. Sooo dat made us think about another family wot sung together - da Osmonds wot sang a songy called One Bad Apple!  Why, well dat Alfie was a bit norty not getting up and doing stuff and doing dem drugs so we thort dem Osmonds was da opposite and even tho One Bad Apple is a love songy, we says it dus mean dat we all makes mistakes sumtimes... oh and here da linky.

@claptonterrier
Hi Miss Lexie. Last week…*cough*…you won with a song called Alfie. Alfie, of course, was also the name of a famous film. In the recent remake of the film the title track was "The Beat Goes On" written by Sonny Bono. Mr Bono was married to Cher at one time and they made a lot of famous records together. However, she also dated a lot of other famous people, including Gene Simmons from Kiss. So this week my linky is "I was Made for Loving You" by Kiss!

@wonderwinger
This week I've been trying to think of links to Lily Allen's Alfie. Hence, I have been plagued at odd moments by images of Michael Caine staring at me & saying "My name is Michael Caine". It's been a hard week.

"Alfie" was of course the title of a film starring M.C. The soundtrack of the same title was sung surprise, surprise by Cilla Black and later by Cher. The songwriter of this song was the brilliant Burt Bacharach. Burt Bacharach wrote many great songs including my linky "This Guy's in Love with You". This was originally recorded by Herb Alpert in 1967 and later Noel Gallagher covered it as a 70th birthday tribute to Burt. Coincidentally, Lily Allen's talent for singing was noticed by the soprano, Rachel Santesso when she was singing the Noel Gallagher penned tune Wonderwall in the playground.

@terenceterrier
Last week da linky by by Lily Allen and called Alfie. Dis make me fink of da songy by da same name by Cilla Black. Umm and Lily Allen haz 3 “l”s in her name and so duss Cilla Black.

An da winner ............... as chosen by ma dad dus be ................... @freddie_bt wiv My Bruvva Jake. Well dun ma pal!  Briar was close second, Dad likes a bit of Burt Snackattack he said ;).  Pffttttttt silly man! Oh an dat means you will be selectin the winner next week.

It's over to you! Email me: lexie at toxicpenguin dot com or DM me on twitter (@dogstoyevsky) wiv your link suggestion followin on from dis one! You has until noon (GMT) Sunday 22nd September 2013 (gets it to me by 2pm UK time if poss).

Lexie's Chain: The Hundred and Thirty Eighth Chain

Hello pals! Welcome to week 138 of #lexieschain. Last week the winner was Briar wiv Stranglers and Golden Brown! So wot dus we dus av this week?

@smcheetham
So the winner was by The Stranglers another one of their songs was No More Heroes which fitted into their punk ethic at the time I remember those days well. So that took me to another song with Heroes in the title and that's Heroes by David Bowie. So its a heroes based link to Heroes by David Bowie. good luck all.

@skye613
So all week my brain been thinking how to linky this great song I never heard before. Congrats to Briar for "Golden Brown" . The image I can't get out of ma head is the fields of waving grain. Now what is made of this stuff? Or better what 3 things! One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer.

@djladylexie
Ma linky does be drugs. Golden Brown is reported to be abowty brown (aka heroin) Leader singer of The Stranglers was Hugh Cornwell. Hugh Cornwell starred in a Peter Richardson (Comic Strip) black comedy British movie called Eat The Rich. Peter Richardson also directed another Comic Strip movie called The Supergrass. Kevin and Keith Allen (wot be bruvvas) each star in one of the movies. Keith Allen is famus dad of also famus singer wot be Lily Allen. So ma song dus be by Lily Allen wot be called Alfie. This is about her little bruvva wot dus like doin drugs (weed).

@freddie_bt
Wot an excellent winnin entwy we ad, Golden Brown is a song dat we av always liked (nearly as much as "Peaches"), ambiguous in its wefewences to heroin and love. We av always assumed dat da words "tied to the mast" is likenin da addictive qualities of opiates n of Hugh Cornwell's then girlfriend to Oysseus' encounter with da Sirens of Greek Mythology. Dere is a film called "Sirens" in which Tara Fitzgerald's character reveals her Siren like qualities to her drab vicar husband(Hugh Grant) wiv little left to da imajinashun of da viewers. Dad has no wecollection of da music in "Sirens" but Tara Fitzgerald also starred in a great film called "Brassed Off" which examined da destwuction of Britain's coal mining communities. In da film she "plays" our linky, one of Dad's favwite pieces of music da Adagio from Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez, a vewy evocative piece dat weminds im of Castille where da summer is so hot even da rivers seem too exhausted to flow. Ere it is, not played by orchestra n classical guitar but by a colliery town's brass band wiv a host of fine British actors includin da bwilliant Pete Posthlethwaite as conductor.

@claptonterrier
Hello Miss Lexie….last week LAdy Briar of Kent won with Golden Brown by the Stranglers. This song only got to No.2 in the charts and was stopped from being number 1 by A Town Called Malice/Precious by the Jam. The Stranglers complained that because ATCM was a double A side with Precious that Jam fans were buying two copies of the record and that stopped their song getting to the top of the charts. Another very famous song that did not get to No. 1 was Wonderall by Oasis….stopped by Robson & Jerome! Euw!……So Wonderwall is my link this week….

@bunnersandharvs
So den a very well dun to dat Briar fur da winnin linky last week by The Stranglers, Golden Brown...our linky dus be eva simple. Since da songy was Golden and about drugs and women, we thort about David Bowie, hee hee. And, well he did have a songy called Golden Years which was written at a time when he was rilly in to dem drugs too so we going wid dat as our linky dis week...tatata....ooohhh yeah golden years....dat dat dat....

@rosieterrier
Congratulations to Briar on last weeks win. I have thought and thought this week and I drew inspiration from mum cos she been singing my chainy song all week!!! It's driving me crazzzzy! So Golden Brown makes me think of lovely warm sunshine, I considered 'There's always the Sun' by the Stranglers cos I luvs dat song but finally went for Neil Young with 'Heart of Gold' (stop singing mum!) these songs are linked for me because of the warm sunny, loving feeling dey evoke.

@borderpup
How to do a linky from Golden Brown by The Stranglers? Well, we fort we could go in umpteen diffrunt directions wiv dat one! The Stranglers did have a hit wiv Peaches, so we decided to go wiv annuver - ahem - fruit based song. We couldn't inflict Agadoo on everyfur, bol! So we settled on Blueberry Hill by Fats Domino.

@diamondbertie
Last weeks winner was @wonderwinger who chose Golden Brown by The Stranglers, this was about opium, so I thought of another harvest slightly less destructive and a fine source of revenue for the tax man - tobacco my choice is Just One More Cigarette by Danny Scott.

(Lexie: Sorry I can't find this one but I'd love to hear it if anyone else knows)

@terenceterrier
Da winning linky last week “Golden Brown” tells us abowt da opium poppy aka papaver somniferum wot contain opiates wot be used to extract opium, morphine and make heroin . Dey come in lotsa colours. Da white poppies are used as a symbol for peeps wot dussnt like war. Da purple poppies are used as a symbol to rememba da animals and birds wot died in da conflicts n wars. So for my linky I chose “Purple Haze” by Jimi Hendrix cos dat wot you be in if you woz using norty drugs like wot he did.

An da winner ............... as chosen by @wonderwinger  .............. dus be ........... oh noooo!! bumholes .... is me!!  Well dun me! Oh an dat means dad will be selectin the winner next week.

It's over to you! Email me: lexie at toxicpenguin dot com or DM me on twitter (@dogstoyevsky) wiv your link suggestion followin on from dis one! You has until noon (GMT) Sunday 15th September 2013 (gets it to me by 2pm UK time if poss).

Lexie's Chain: The Hundred and Thirty Seventh Chain

Hello pals! Welcome to week 137 of #lexieschain. Last week the winner was Rosie wiv somfink erm what was it ang on I check .... oh yeah .... She's Gone, Hall and Oates. Brillant linky  RosiePosie! So wot dus we dus av this week?

@diamondbertie
Last weeks winner was @rosieterrier - her choice was She's Gone by Hall & Oats.

This is a lament about loss on that theme I choose Kirsty McCall's Thank you for the Days. Also a lament of loss and recalled the good memories.

@skye613
@rosieterrier won the Lexieschain with " She's Gone " by Hall & Oates from their best (IMHO) best album Abandoned Luncheonette. A beautiful song lamenting a lost love. This week on Twitter I did lose two good pals OTRB. This song does speak to our lose, their journey & those they left behind " Into The West ".

@kelsoterrier
Ok, I see "She's Gone" by Hall & Oates is requiring a link. Well I normally just have a bowl of Oats and a Hall full of them seems to me to be in excess of what you should eat! Hmm, in excess...INXS! Now, I seem to remember Daryl Hall sang backing vocals on a couple INXS songs (Original Sin and All The Voices). What else can I link....well if "She's Gone" then she did Disappear! So my link is the excellent INXS with the fabulous song Disappear.

@freddie_bt
We wuz stwugglin to fink of a linky n den it occurred to us wot if we picks a song dat we'd like to link to n see if deres a route back. Our startin point came fwom da fact dat today Dad did book tickets to see da luvly The Leisure Society at The Stables in MK, da venue founded in deir garden by Jonny Dankworth n Cleo Laine. The Leisure Society is one of Dad's favwite acts. Brian Eno said of deir album "The Sleeper" "its the only thing I've been listening too lately with enthusiasm". Brian Eno has worked on many occasions with Robert Fripp who in turn has frequently worked with Daryl Hall, producing LPs and performing together. So we found a linky n ere fwom deir "The Sleeper" album are da quintessentially English "The Leisure Society" wiv "Last of the Melting Snow", at da time dis song wuz nominated for a Novello Award Nick Hemming who wrote it n sings it wuz supplementing his meagre income as a musician by workin in a fabric warehouse:

Dey also do a bwilliant cover of Gary Numan's "Cars" totally transforming it wiv ukelele, flute, cello n violin, well worth listenin too.

@claptonterrier
Hello Miss Lexie…last week Miss Rosie won with "She's Gone" by Hall & Oats….that made us think about the poor people who go missing every day around the world….some of their own choice and many not….that's a very sad situation so I apologise for imposing a somber note into the Chain again…..but my choose this week is "Missing" be everything But the Girl….*run run*….got to dash!

@bunnersandharvs
Well dat Rosie paws was a cleva one winning dat linky last week with Hall & Oats' s She's Gone. We is rilly prowd of hur fur dat one! Now dat songy did make dese paws think dat if sume one wos gone den you might get sumone to go look fur dem too so dat is why our linky dus be by da same two singers Hall and Oates songy Private Eyes! We also liked clapping our paws together when we did sing dis. So get your paws clapping and get dem snapping too...cos we wotchin you! Hee hee...

@wonderwinger
The beautiful and gorgeous Rosie last week chose Hall and Oats "She's Gone". This week on my walks I've been watching the farmers bring in their harvest. There are all sorts of crops: wheat, barley, peas, linseed and OATS. I was struck by the colour of the fields that were once green but are now GOLDEN BROWN. My linky is related to the altogether more controversial crop of opium shall be Golden Brown by The Stranglers.

@terenceterrier
Da winnin linky last week woz “She’s gone”. Well if someone goes you usually say “Goodbye”. So my linky be “Bye Bye Baby (Baby Goodbye)” by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

@borderpup
So, where do we go from 'she's gone'? Well we fort it would be good to have a nice song about coming home or being at home! First we fort of Crosby, Stills & Nash wiv 'Our House', but seeing as it refers to '2 cats in the yard'- pfft! - we decided to look elsewhere. Boaf songs for the last 2 weeks have bin expressing emoshuns about someone leaving, so we choose 'Feels Like Home' by Bonnie Raitt, wot dus be the best version of this song. It's all about what it feels like to be wiv a loved one, like a rescue dog finding their forever home!

@djladylexie
Nuvva song wot we dus like of Hall & Oates dus be Maneater. So we gowin wif simple one today – wot be Maneater by Nelly Furtado!

An da winner ............... as chosen by @rosieterrier  .............. dus be ........... Briar (@wedgywinger) Well dun Briar! Oh an dat means you will be selectin the winner next week.

Ere wot Rosie said bowt it: Ooooh, as usual all da linkies were brilliant and choosing was very difficult. But I have decided dat the song 'Golden Brown' dus win. I loved the thought of the harvesting and the oaty links!  (we was careful not to listen too loud tho cos mum said dat when she was a schoolgirl she was told dat song would affect her heartbeat!!). I say, "Pah", turn it up......to 11 ;-).

It's over to you! Email me: lexie at toxicpenguin dot com or DM me on twitter (@dogstoyevsky) wiv your link suggestion followin on from dis one! You has until noon (GMT) Sunday 8th September 2013 (gets it to me by 2pm UK time if poss).
